Face Off Season 10 episode 2 recap: Child’s Play

Welcome to the Face Off Season 10 episode 2 recap! Last week Greg got the boot, and Melissa got the win. This week, we’re still working in teams, which makes my life as a recapper easier. Thanks Face Off!

Quote of the week: at The Culver Studios, someone says “This does feel like a studio.” Um, cause it is?

Ve joins McKenzie to let the artists know what this week’s spotlight challenge is. If you read our questions with the judges, this is the challenge Ve and McKenzie liked best. They need to create a larger-than-life whimsical larger-than-life character inspired by one of the larger-than-life objects on the stage next to them.objects Face Off Season 10 episode 2

The teams (and their object):

Walter & Ant (race car)
Njoroge & Jennifer (crayons)
Anna & Melanie (watch)
Robert & Yvonne (dice)
Rob & Johnny (lollipops)
Katie & Kaleb (key)

As the winner of last week’s challenge, Melissa gets to pick a team of 2 to join. She chooses Rob & Johnny. Smartly, she realizes that because their team has 3 people, they will have more expectations placed on them.

Ve emphasizes with the artists that they are NOT to go to the dark side. They mean it this time when they say whimsical. No horror makeups allowed.

Katie & Kaleb are going the porcelain doll route that unlocks imagination with the key. Huh? Porcelain dolls have been done really well in previous seasons, so I’d be really careful about making that selection. Let’s review:

Granted, both of those makeups were more on the horror side, but they’re really well done. The judges may not be comparing, but I sure am.

There’s something about hearing a German accent saying “for the children” with the following expression that’s a little unnerving.

Robert Face Off Season 10 episode 2
Colorful. For the children.

Robert is going to make his board-game man very colorful. For the children. This is going to go horror, for sure.

The trio of artists is creating a lollipop man. He’s an imaginary friend of a little boy whose father owns a candy store.

Mel is having a serious lack of confidence in their choices for their watchman character. Anna’s tries to talk her down, but only Mr. Westmore can do that.

Njoroge and Jennifer start off strong, but by the end of day 2 they are suspicious they’re in the bottom. Their crayon man just isn’t coming together, and they don’t do themselves any favors with their makeup choices.

This week’s special guest judge is Pee-wee himself – Paul Reubens!

The judges can’t figure out why the crayon team put their neck seams where they did. The paint & prosthetic are just peeling off the actor’s neck.

Neville thinks the porcelain doll looks more like a corpse. There’s too much black, and they didn’t get the porcelain doll face shape previous artists have done so well.

Unsurprisingly, board game man is creepy & has some construction flaws. The actor isn’t selling it either.

The trio’s lollipop doesn’t smile. Smile actor, smile! Paul Reubens is saying you look sad right in front of you. SMILE for crying out loud! Can you not smile? It’s so weird. This is a case of the actor not helping the makeup.

For an episode the judges liked, there’s a lot of flaws they’re seeing in this week’s makeups.

The race car & key porcelain doll are in the mediocre middle.

In the top are the lollipop and the watch.

In the bottom are the crayon and the dice.

The dice character has a bunch of what were supposed to be playing pieces on him. Paul Reubens points out that instead they look like nipples. Nipples, nipples, nipples. Tell me you can unsee it. Nope. You can’t.

Mel and her freakout over the watch end up winning this week. Jennifer and her cracked cowl end up getting eliminated. It’s way too early for the judges to use their save.

What did you guys think of this week’s challenge? Which object would you have picked? What kind of character would you create? Tell us below!

  1. You would think the quote of the week is Ruebens saying “Sorry I’m saying nipple so much.” You cannot buy that kind of funny.
