Will Detective Andrea Cornell find justice in Season 2?
Don’t worry, Secrets and Lies fans, at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour, series executive producer Barbie Kligman assures that Cornell “Will find justice,” in Season 2. The crime anthology returns with a new cast, and new location and a new murder.
ABC has not yet announced a premiere date for Season 2 of Secrets and Lies.
After you wipe a tear because Ryan Phillipe won’t be on this season, know that “Everything about this season is different,” says Juliette Lewis, saying she’s intrigued by the new cast, and this season’s setting in wealthy corporate America. Unlike other Anthology series (i.e. American Horror Story, American Crime), Lewis is the only main character returning from Season 1. Although executive producer Barbie Kligman mentioned that a few ancillary characters, like French Stewart, who played a lab tech in Season 1, will reprise his role in Season 2.
Lewis says that Det. Cornell is up against more in her investigation this season, with new levels for her to unravel as the writing reveals itself to her character. The season focuses on the death of Kate Warner (Jordana Brewster). Her husband, Eric Warner (Michael Ealy) is the prime suspect and his lawyer is his sister Amanda (Mekia Cox) who also was Kate’s BFF.Producer Barbie Kligman first found the series’ location of Charlotte, North Carolina, since that’s where Det. Cornell was from in Season 1. Kligman also noted that Charlotte is also the nation’s second largest banking center (outside of NYC) so the finance industry was a natural avenue for the show to explore.
When asked about his character “giving everyone a hard time,” Michael Ealy dissolved into a fit of giggles. The actor said, “He has made a pertain progression in his life that everyone should be accountable. He’s kind of annoying sometimes, like that.”
In the story, Eric Warner, the family patriarch, (played by Terry O’Quinn), is surrounded by a family filled-with African-American children.“This show has always been about the things that are universal to me,” says Kligman. “It’s just about a family,” and just decided that the family just happened to have a white father and a black mother.
Juliette Lewis revealed that after all of the work she had done on homicide detectives “and ‘detectiving,’” she wasn’t ready to let go of her character.
Lewis loved throwing the gender notions that we have on it’s ear. People in this line of work, Paramedics, Brain Surgeons, Military women are defined by how well they do their jobs. They had a political incorrectness and joking nature because they work well together, but at the end of the day, gender was irrelevant.
Lewis was very deliberate about making sure that her character was believable in her line of work. “She will not be out there in a low-heel boot!” she demanded.
Jordana Brewster has the difficult task of playing a character who is dead, and who is seen primarily in flashbacks. Brewster joked that her scenes involve a lot of fog machines.
