First Look: Freeform’s Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters
Shadowhunters stars Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane. (ABC Family/Bob D’Amico)

Freeform (formerly ABC Family) starts the new year with the premiere of a dark and complex fantasy drama based on The Mortal Instruments, the blockbuster young adult book series by Cassandra Clare. Shadowhunters, a sexy, action-packed fight between good and evil, follows the saga of 18-year-old Clary Fray as she discovers that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human/angel hybrids who hunt demons. This new discovery throws Clary into a dark and dangerous new world where she finds herself living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves.

Katherine McNamara (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, The Fosters) stars as the series’ reluctant heroine, and has great admiration for the way her butt-kicking character faces her new reality. “She was a strong, independent woman, ready to go to art school, ready to start her life, and then within the first 10 minutes of the pilot episode, all of that is taken away from her,” she shares. “Everything she knows, everything she loves, everything she thought was true about her world comes crashing down around her.”

The source material is beloved, and the series successfully balances both being loyal to it and being inventive. “We really stay true to the characters, but then we do change a few things, because we want to keep it exciting for people who are new to the shadow world and people who know the books cover to cover,” says McNamara. She hints at a few Easter egg surprises (including the necklace Clary receives in the series pilot), which will surely delight fans of the series.

So what do you think of Shadowhunters? I think it looks dark and twisty and I love the hot fashions of the show’s characters. (Especially Harry Shum Jr. who’s looking mega-steamy post-Glee!) Will you be watching?

  1. I just saw Shadow Hunters and it was great fun and can’t wait to see more I may not be your target 18-49, but being 57 only makes me more willing to seek more fantasy and a toddler chomping at the bit. I love Teen Wolf, The Colony, The Walking Dead and think the Talking Dead is delish. More and much more is needed from writers who work to stretch their imagination. Shadow Hunters is a much needed taste of monsters, demons, and wonder.
