Amazon’s Emmy-nominated kids series Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street returns for a second season. The entire episode is available to stream or download from Amazon’s Prime Video beginning October 30.

In the new season’s 13 episodes, middle school friends Gortimer (Sloane Morgan Siegel), Mel (Ashley Boettcher) and Ranger (Drew Justice) struggle with wanting to grow up, while still enjoying the perks of childhood in their quaint suburb. It’s a great place to grow up, it’s filled with interesting people, and the unexpected lies around every corner.

New adventures find Gortimer cloning himself, Mel’s brain literally reaching capacity, Ranger’s imaginary friend coming to life, and the group’s quest to discover a legendary flower. Along the way they ponder first kisses, go on first dates and rewrite history.

I fell in love with Gortimer in Season 1. It’s a series that treats kids as intelligent consumers of media. The plotlines are complex, the acting is superb, and unlike most tween-targeted TV, it isn’t pandering for cheap laughs. It’s what tweens should be watching … and demanding.

Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street is another in Amazon’s arsenal of excellence. Series like Gortimer, Transparent, Annedroids and Alpha House make Amazon Studios one of today’s best and most inventive producers of original programming. It is no surprise that Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street was Emmy-nominated in its first season, and after Season 2, I hope it’s not long before the series hoists some hardware.

One of the bravest things the series tackles this season is the unexpected death of Mel’s mother. It’s a difficult topic for any child to consider, let alone experience, and the show handles the storyline with impeccable grace. The episode, “Mel vs. the Future” is one of this finest episodes you will see this year in all of television. And I can’t stress enough the performances of the series’ young actors — Emmy committee take note.

Season 2 also boasts an impressive list of guest stars including Anthony Ruivavar (Southland) as Claire’s new love interest Adam, Rachael Harris (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as the Mayor of Normal, Nate Torrence (Hello, Ladies) as Ranger’s imaginary friend Iggy, James Urbaniak (Agent Carter) as Dr. Grapehall, and William Zabka (Karate Kid) as Sensei Jeff.
