Survivor recap Episode 6: What happens when Spencer has to play with Kass?

Survivor: Second Chance recap “Bunking With the Devil,” Season 31, Episode 6 (original airdate Oct. 28): When Jeff Probst makes a late-night visit to one of the camps you know it’s not to deliver good news. Probst had a message for Terry Dietz. He wakes up Terry and asks him to accompany him to the beach where he tells him that his wife Survivorcalled saying his son Danny is in the hospital and both she and the doctor believe that the situation is serious enough that he needs to come home. Without hesitation Terry’s out – family’s first. It’s heartbreaking to see such a classy guy like Terry leave the game under these circumstances — a loving father so far from home when his family needs him.

“To have someone go home like this is worse than a medevac,” Kass assesses of her teammate, “it’s just a reminder how quickly things can change.”

So why did Terry Dietz have to leave Survivor? His son was critically ill with an enlarged heart. His son was on a heart transplant list and eventually a match came through (see reader comment below). The good news is that the transplant was a success. Terry and his son Danny make an appearance at the end of the episode in support of organ donation. Now back to the episode …

Reward Challenge
As the three tribes converged for the reward challenge, they were shocked to see Terry was gone, and, also, to learn it was time again to drop their buffs. Yep, the tribes switched for the third time since the game started. The two new tribes now are:

Ta Keo
Abi
Kass
Keith
Kelly Wiglesworth
Ciera
Spencer
Andrew Savage
Woo

Bayon Tribe
Jeremy
Joe
Keith
Kelley Wentworth
Kimmi
Stephen Fishbach
Tasha

The reward challenge was for fried chicken and mac and cheese. The challenge paired opposing tribe members in one-on-one battles where they needed to oil up their bodies and slide down a slip-and-slide like track, grab a ring and throw the ring – trying to hook it on to a stand. Fishback makes a lame attempt at the challenge and gets schooled by Jeremy who tells him that he needs to believe in himself, as the tribe does. Both tribes were tied up, so the final moment came down to Wiglesworth versus Wentworth. Wiglesworth wins.

Later, back at the Bayon camp, Stephen was an emotional mess — like literally crying over the possibility that he might not be able to convince his fellow tribemates to vote out Joe so they could take control of the game when they actually have a chance. “This would be the move that sets the tenor for the whole season.” But Stephen’s been “bugging” — Jeremy tells him in annoyance, and he disagrees with Stephen’s gameplan believing Joe to be an asset in strength and also a deflection for him (Jeremy doesn’t want to be the only strong man standing on their tribe).

Survivor recapImmunity Challenge
We’ve seen this challenge 14 times in various iterations — it’s the gag-inducing, food eating challenge — this one featuring local Cambodian delicacies.

Kimmi and Tasha take on Woo and Spencer. The challenge: eating two tarantulas. Spencer demolishes the thing in his mouth and is first to finish. Woo and Spencer win.
Next up it’s Keith and Jeremy versus Savage and Ciera. Ciera struggles with the giant water beetle and Keith and Jeremy win.
Abi and Kass take on Fishbach and Wentworth eating pig snout. Fishbach is done first (see he can do challenges), followed by Wentworth.
Then we go to individual match ups where Joe takes on Wiglesworth. Wiglesworth beats Joe! Now that we weren’t expecting.
Woo is ready to take on Kimmi — their challenge is pigs brain. “I haven’t had pig in 30 years,” Kimmi tells Probst, and forfeits to Woo.
Then it’s Ciera vs. Wentworth eating scorpions. Wentworth wins and ties it up.
The final showdown sees Kass taking on Tasha. They get the most disgusting delicacy, which was a duck embryo. Kass can’t choke it down; she’s gagging and spitting it out. Tasha has to do a motivational dance of sorts to get the thing down, but she does and wins it for Bayon.

Tribal Council: As for all the pre-Tribal Council scramble, the consensus seems to be Spencer but Ciera doesn’t like the fact that Savage suggests using her name as a decoy to throw off Spencer. Kass secretly approaches Spencer (her nemisis) and decides to save him instead and Woo gets totally blindsided (along with Savage). Welcome back Chaos Kass!

  1. That information regarding Terry’s son isn’t correct. Filming for Cambodia began in May, and it wasn’t until September that Danny got his transplant. Terry was only out there for 5 episodes, so 15 days at most. Danny was critically ill with an enlarged heart when Terry left the game, so it wasn’t necessarily good news that Terry received that night. Might want to get the facts straight on something so serious….just sayin.

    • Thanks for the information Michelle. The great news is that his son is OK. We love Terry so it was such a disappointment to see him go.
