While NBC made it very clear a few months ago that Donald Trump would not be returning to The Apprentice, he apparently has not been cut off from all of the network’s properties. It was announced today that Trump — the real estate magnate who is currently the front-runner for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination — will host Saturday Night Live on Nov. 7.
The appearance will mark Trump’s second time hosting the show, with his first being in April 2004 when he was plugging his then-new series The Apprentice. Looking back at some of his monologue from back then, one can see that Trump’s opinion of himself has not diminished over the years: “After just one season, I am about to become the highest-paid television personality in America,” he said at the time. “And as everyone in this room knows, ‘highest-paid’ means ‘best.'”
It probably was inevitable that Trump would be asked to host SNL, given America’s apparent fascination with him in recent months — whether people love him or hate him, they can’t seem to take their eyes off him, and he certainly has livened up the Republican presidential debates, helping lead them to record ratings so far.
With SNL cast member Taran Killam himself doing a mean impression of Trump, it seems very likely that the real Trump and faux Trump will come into contact with one another on the show, and it might be hard, in this “Trump-off,” to determine which one is more ridiculous.
The musical guest on Nov. 7 will be Sia, who marks her second appearance on SNL.
