Viewers get an inside look at the glamorous — and not so glamorous — lives of sports stars’ wives and girlfriends via the WAGS reality show on E!
With the first season coming to an end tonight at 10/9CT, cast member Barbie Blank shares what fans can expect.
“You’ll see how the dynamic is going to change,” she said. “Things that started from the first episode until now are totally different. Sasha is about to have her baby. There are some complications with that. Olivia gets her athlete date. So we’ll see where that goes. With me, it’s more what’s going on with all the girls and planning my wedding and what we get to look forward to in the future.”
Blank, best known to WWE fans as former diva Kelly Kelly, is engaged to the NHL’s Sheldon Souray, and the couple is gearing up for their wedding in Cabo. The episodes this season chronicled the blonde bombshell’s preliminary celebration.
Blank recalls when she agreed to open her personal life to the world.
“I feel like with any reality show, you kind of have reservations,” she said. “You don’t know how you are going to be portrayed. With me, I’m just going to be myself. Then either people are going to like me or they’re not. I’m actually very happy with how the season has gone and how I was portrayed because it really is just me. I’m not trying to play a part or be somebody I’m not. I’m very happy with how the show has gone. My fiancé has been supportive when the idea was brought to me. He said, ‘You know what baby. This is a great opportunity. Have fun with it. Be yourself and go for it.’ So I had his blessing. So I was able to have fun with it.”
Given the girls’ trip to Las Vegas and her bachelorette party, it’s easy to say Blank did just that. However, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. She had her share of drama with some of the ladies, too.
“I feel like the meaning of the show with wives and girlfriends, you automatically think the girlfriends stay together and wives stay together,” Blank said. “That’s how it kind of worked in the beginning because I didn’t really know the girlfriends that well. We got off on a bad foot, but after time went on and I got to know them. We got to know each others’ families and friends. We just bonded a lot. You’ll get to see that in this season finale is how the dynamic has changed. A lot of the girls don’t know how to take it and don’t really get it. I feel like I’ve connected with the girlfriends a lot more after time.”
Blank says that six years of on-camera experience on the WWE helped ease her transition into the world of reality.
“I feel like the girls aren’t really used to having the cameras in your face and stuff like that because I don’t think many of them have done what I have done,” Blank explains. “I think especially when it came to social media and getting criticized on social media. I know that has been hard for a lot of the girls. I’m so used to it. I used to get ‘you suck’ all the time on Twitter or ‘you can’t wrestle.’ I’m so used to the hating on social media. I don’t even give it a glance anymore.”
Overall, Blank says the response to her involvement in WAGS has been overwhelmingly positive. She appreciates those who have stood by her, even during the start of her pro wrestling career when she was just 19.
“My family and friends have been my No. 1 fans,” Blank said. “They have watched every week. They are so supportive of it. The lead-in is Total Divas. So it’s perfect, because fans want to also know what life is like after WWE. It’s the perfect transition into that. WWE hasn’t been very supportive, so that’s kind of upsetting. I gave them so many years. We’re on the same network. We are right after Total Divas.
“They just haven’t given any support whatsoever. They support when guys do other things outside of the business, like The Rock and Steve Austin. They support them fully. For me, it’s like, ‘Really? We didn’t have a falling out. I left on good terms. Now that I’m doing this on my own, and I’m on the same network, you could be more supportive!’ So that has been upsetting. But people I used to work with and a lot of the wrestlers watch it. So that’s great to have their support. Maryse came on this season, so that was cool. It has been good.”
The Jacksonville native enjoys live-tweeting during the show airings. She says she is very aware of her surroundings and what she’s saying and hasn’t had any regrets. “It’s more like that was a bad camera angle or ‘I shouldn’t have drank that much,’” Blank said.
The success of WAGS has led to E! renewing the show for a second season. Blank is looking forward to what’s to come.
“I feel like when we start filming again, it will be right in the midst of my bridal shower and wedding,” the bride-to-be said. “Everything is starting to happen. So that is my main focus right now. So I think you will see a lot of that on the show. I hope I don’t turn into bridezilla. I haven’t yet, but you never know, especially when cameras are around. So we’ll see how it goes. I’m just very excited to be marrying the man of my dreams and planning this wedding. Everything is just really exciting right now.
“…I feel like the wrestling has left me, and I’m trying to transition into myself and making a name for myself. With WWE if they approached me or we worked something out with my show and their show and are kind of be able to support each other and help each other out, then that would be great. We’ll see if that ever happens.”
Besides her impending nuptials, Blank has a lot on her plate professionally. Her new calendar for the upcoming year is coming soon. The athletic beauty is also involved with Lynx Fitness, a new business venture. And let’s not forget her politicking on social media for the part of C.J. Parker in the new Baywatch movie.
“That would be the role of a lifetime,” Blank said. “I have been talking to The Rock here and there. He is like, ‘I’m rooting for you. We’ll see what happens.’ Every hot actress, model, athlete is going out for this role, but you never know how things. He was like, ‘You’d be perfect for it. I was like, ‘Yay! I’m going to try to use my Twitter following to my advantage. Let’s just put this out there!’”
