Recap: Naked And Afraid XL, Episode 6: 40 Days Sacrifice

At the end of last week’s episode of Naked and Afraid XL, Jeff, EJ and Shane’s slumber was disrupted by a late-night visitor. The show’s producers aren’t sure if it was a jaguarundi or a crab-eating fox, but either way, that is a gato no bueno.

In this week’s episode, we rejoin the alpha male tribe moments after the growl woke them. I’m guessing this is the last sleep they’ll get tonight. If it was me, I may never sleep again.

Day 25
Early in the morning, Alana and Danielle move closer to the extraction point —and what do you know, they’re heading where everyone else is: Piranha Lake!

Naked And Afraid XL, Episode 6
I’ve got to hand it to Alana and Danielle, They sure survive in style!

Danielle is leaving a fruit and cashew-rich area in order to be closer to the extraction point while she still has the energy for such a strenuous hike. I think this could be a misstep for her. She has seemingly found the one area of the ecosystem that can support a vegetarian like herself; the other groups moves because a lack of protein and she isn’t willing to eat the animals that seem plentiful at Piranha Lake.

Once the sun is up, Shane, EJ and Jeff check out the giant paw prints left behind by last night’s’ visitor. And they are gigantic! Maybe they should consider putting a “wall of sticks”/ branches around their sleeping platform, like they do in Africa to deter lions?

The group of five — Eva, Laura, Dani Luke and Chris — have set up a temporary camp about a 1/4 mile away from the three men. They’ve finished the last of their dried mangos, and are read to hunt for food, and build themselves a more permanent shelter.

Even though Shane has eaten protein, she still so dehydrated that his body isn’t working correctly. He should spend a day being committed to rehydrating or he’s going to end up leaving!

While Jeff shows the group around the area, Chris sees two eels. The team makes a plan “I’m ready to get shocked,” says Luke, as he uses his arm to make a mini-wall to try to keep the eel in a small pool of water. It isn’t long before he’s shocked, stunned and the eel escapes. “You don’t play patty-cake with an electric eel,” laughs EJ, who has been watching from the shore.

Danielle and Alana are still trudging across the sweltering Savannah. It is a long, hot walk and before long, they find the group of 5 who welcome them into their group. Shane isn’t thrilled to see his former teammates, but Alana and Danielle are excited to work with others.

Naked And Afraid XL, Episode 6
Wanna know what’s better than a team of 5? A team of 7!!!

Once the three men join the group for a pow-wow, they decide that they want to remain a three person team, leave the group and start building their shelter. Shane is still so dehydrated that he’s soon spent. Seriously dude, lie in the shade for a day. Man the fire. Boil some water. There is no shame in taking a sick day.

That night, while the mega group site around their fire, a snake literally pops out of the ground under Chris’ butt! Chris isn’t nearly as freaked out as I would be; but he sees a meal, whereas I’d only see a fanny-snake. In a matter of minutes, the snake is shish-kabobed and everyone (but Danielle) enjoys a bedtime snack.

Day 27
The group of 7 starts making their massive shelter. Over in the men’s camp, they’re busy chopping down trees while the larger group uses the resources on the forest floor. “Different strokes for different folks,” figures Luke. Over in Man-land, Shane is still hurting. Water is the main problem for all of the survivalists, or rather, a lack of water. There simply enough water. Every mouthful requires collection, boiling and cooling. it’s a long process that never nets enough to leave anyone feeling quenched. Shane is so desperate for water that he has dug a well and volunteers to drink fro it first. It’s selfless and Shane probably figures as the team’s weakest member, he’s one foot out the door anyway.

Day 28 night
Shane is actually feeling pretty well and Jeff expresses gratitude at his friend’s arrival in camp.

Day 29
Jeff prays over the fire and miraculously, Shane is still feeling well after drinking the water for a few days. I hope he’s turned a corner! Jeff takes a tentative taste and think it’s delicious. EJ follows suit.

The large group tries to catch fish in Dani’s mosquito net while Jeff watches. He simply drops his fishing line into the water and pulls out a fish. He makes it look easy, but he’s also had times when his hook has come up empty. Very clever editing, TV makers!

Eva sees a snake in a tree and the group tries to coax out the slithering beast. “Now they’re shaking bushes, like a couple of monkeys,” laughs EJ with a grin.

I’m sure if the producers could add tuba music to this scene, they would, but instead they highlight the idiocy of the moment with string music.

Jeff has kept fishing and catches and eel to go along with his fish. I think he may have yanked the beast out of the water with just his fishing line. Jeff shares his eel with the other group. Danielle is town because she doesn’t want to have to ean an animal to survive.

XLR
The XRL continues to be a useless and arbitrary measurement which is supposed to measure the teams’ “Progress, Skill and Teamwork.” That’s like measuring the survivalists “Fun, Stink, and Pain.” I could throw a dart at a board and come up with equally random numbers. Or roll a 20-sided dice. Anyway, here are some random numbers.

The Alpha Males, EJ, Jeff and Shane have enjoyed a massive amount of protein and have potable freshwater, but Shane isn’t feeling well so their score has dipped from 8.5 to 8.4 out of 10.0

Danielle and Alana — who previously measured a 6.0 out of 10 have merged with “Team Nuts and Butts'” 7.5 to become a super team with a super-bogus score of 7.2 out of 10.0.

That night, nine of the 10 survivalists feast on meat. Danielle sits and watches.

Day 30
Danielle is hungry and sets out along the lagoon looking for new food. Alana and Danielle see Shane passed out along the water’s edge. And they walk away, unconcerned.

EJ comes to bring Shane some food and sees that he’s just not getting better. Shane drags himself to his partners and tells them that it’s time for him to tap out. He is grateful for for amazing experience that he’s had with Jeff and EJ, but doesn’t want to risk his health or their success. “Brothers for Life,” promises EJ. And with that, Shane is gone.

Naked And Afraid XL, Episode 6
Shane struggles with the knowledge that his time on Naked and Afraid XL is over.

EJ and Jeff let the rest of the group know that Shane has left. Before he leaves, Shane says, “I am tapping out because I am an alpha male, I am the alpha male.”

Shane is a strange bird, but I’m sad to be him leave. I wouldn’t want him as my survival partner because I don’t think I could trust him to not kill me, but he’s a heck of a hard worker, to his own detriment. I am glad that he found a few good friends, and hope that the issues that he had with his teammates was more the result of clever editing and TV “Manufactured storytelling,” and he, Alana and Danielle were able to leave this experience as friends. I’m not sure if would have had the courage to tap out.

Eva and Laura Show How to Make Fire
A few weeks ago, Alana said, “Survival is lazy.” I agree that in a true survival situation, you should conserve. But Naked and Afraid, (particularly Naked and Afraid XL) isn’t about waiting passively for rescue, this is about conquering an environment and I’d like to offer an alternative statement, “Survival is patience.” In order to be successful, you have to wait for opportunities, and be smart about how, when and where you expend energy.

Below, Eva and Laura show that making a fire with a bow drill requires so much more patience than I would have ever thought necessary. It makes me want to try this method! And if you want to apply to be on Naked and Afraid, this is a must-watch, must-imitate, must-master video.

  1. Do you guys think Jeff should share all his huge sources of protein every time with the other group? I know how he feels bad not sharing, but it is not fair that he is the only one trying to catch big prey. The other group kind of try but kind of not. I think they know that Jeff is good hunting and that he will continue to share his catch with them. Then what is the purpose of having two groups if one group is depending on the alpha males to provide them with protein.

    • I think Jeff should STFU when he kills something. If he wants to do something it might be in better taste if he thanked the creature for it’s life instead of ranting like a 12 year old who just made his first touchdown.

      • I agree!

The thing I don’t like about these contestants (hunters/others, in general), is that they excessively ‘toot their own horn’, shoot their mouths off, etc, at their “abililities” (or even LACK, there of!

I liked Shane,…BUT, he was a good example of this, esp. when he claimed that the environment had NOT beat him,..& all the times he claimed to “have balls/be “badass”.

        BS!

The environment DID beat him (plus, his own stupidity for helping those 2 Bimbos, & also using up his energy too fast

        Lets be REAL, folks!!

      • Roger that. Sarge is in charge of every thing but Jeff’s mouth. If he could help keep that shut they’d have much more food for themselves. Jeff has shown some insight into things but his religion keeps getting in his way. His immaturity in attemptin to out-man Sarge is probably at the root of his Neanderthal outbursts.

  2. I want to congratulate Shane for the way he behaved in this show. He always showed integrity, honor and always tried to help his teammates. I’m sure he knew that working the way he did might jeopardize his chances of lasting the 40 days, but he was not going to just sit and let other people take care of him. The reason why he tapped out was because he didn’t want to be a burden to his teammates and that took a lot of guts. Other people would just lay down and let the other teammates take care of them. In my book Shane is a winner and should be very proud of the way he behaved in this challenge. Shane showed more guts and survival skills that others in the show. Way to go Shane. Never change. Your partner in life will be lucky to have you. They can be sure that you will always have their back.

  3. I think Alana let the turtle go, because she hated Shane, & deprived him of it’s protein, to lessen the chances of him enduring till the end of the challenge.

She strikes me as ‘that kind of a whitch’!

ALso, even if SHE, or Danille were not going to eat it,…they could have given Shane the option.

Surprised, also, that he did not retrieve it, as he like; saw where they let it go.

Bet he w not have tapped out, if he’d gotten the protein boost from it!

Finally, I think Alana & her ‘co-witch’, are only putting on a ‘happy faces, toward the other males, cause they’re being smart, in case they need them (they hated Shane too much, after he built their ‘creature comfort (the shelter),..& he was starting not to take their lazyiness,…but, he’d already enriched them, by then.

    • Actually, it was because that scene was filmed on the third day and they were doing fine on protein thanks to Alana’s fishing. Shane just wanted to kill something for the sake of killing since he failed at doing so while hunting.

      • Clearly you are not watching the same show or you are a revisionist. The only time I saw Alana catch fish was after Shane was gone before he hooked up with the Alpha team. She even said she wanted to do it to show up Shane. In fact, she didn’t care about her partner, who is a vegetarian.

      • The defense, “Alana insisted upon letting the turtle go because she thought the team would be able to fill up on minnows”, is about the silliest justification for that decision that I’ve heard. Even if we accept that Alana did not intend to sabotage Shane, she should have known that he needed the protein, she should have known that protein would continue to be hard to come by, and she should have known that giving up protein on a survival challenge is always a bad idea.

      • Right, Shane didn’t want to kill it to eat it, though he was starving, he just wanted to kill it. Did your brains fall out your ear?

    • I agree with you in a big way.. I feel they used him as much as they could and then wanted him gone.. I really didnt want to hear what they had to say or even see them after what they did to Shane..

  4. I was very upset when Shane had to “tap-Out”. He really deserved to be with the ALPHA MALES. I truly believe that if he didn’t expend so much effort while with those TWO NOTHINGS, he would be on the program to the end. Watching Alana and Danielle when they were on their respective episodes of NAKED AND AFRIAD let me know I WOULDN’T WANT TO BE PAIRED WITH EITHER OF THEM!!! But rest assure fans. With EJ and Jeff, they will not tolerate the “antics” from Alana. Danielle has her own demons to face in the upcoming days by being a vegetarian in the group. Given the chance, Alana will eat anything (you’ll see). Let these two start sitting around on their butts around Jeff and watch how fast HE GOES OFF!! As EJ HAS SAID, “THIS IS NO JOKE”.

  5. Alana is a bitch. Wouldn’t still be there without Shane. Hopefully vegetarian Dani has to tap out.

  6. I would like to make a comment about the turtle. Alana and Dani find a turtle then decide to let it go for altruistic reasons or something. Then Jeff and EJ come across a turtle (the same turtle?). They don’t kill it, they don’t even leave it on it’s back, they build some kind of cage and then both of them go off for water. When they come back the turtle is gone. Does killing a turtle and eating it make the ratings go down? I’m wondering what the producers would do if a contestant managed to snare a monkey?

Point of fact, the eel that Shane helped kill was eaten before Alana showed up.

Are Jeff and EJ going to share their well with the other group?

    • Er, actually, no the Turtle that Alana “caught” (since catching a Turtle is as easy to catch as a rock) wasn’t let go for altruistic reasons. It was let go in order to taunt Shane as in: “here’s a nice fat turtle. No! you can’t eat it, hahaha.” It was a twofer for Alana, first she get’s to tease Shane with it then she get’s to endear her minion to her. Win win for Alana.

      • Wrong actually. But for the sake of argument, if catching a turtle is so easy and Shane really was starving, why didn’t he hunt for that turtle later. Or another turtle for that matter? Could it be that he’s that incompetent? Or that he wasn’t really starving, doing just fine on the fish Alana was providing at that time?

        • Please tell me in what episode Alana provided fish to Shane? Episode 4 was repeated last night. Danielle and Alana referred to Shane as the “weird neighbor.” In this episode, Alana is excited when she catches 2 minnows and yells “finally!” Her excitement indicates to me that she hadn’t caught any fish until then. While cooking the fish, Alana asked Danielle if she (Alana) should share the fish with Shane to which Danielle responded “it’s your call.” Alana then said “at this point salvaging a relationship with him (Shane) is not my priority at this point. My priority — feeding myself is my priority.” She then turns to the camera and says “With Danielle being a vegetarian these fish are all mine.”

The majority opinion of the commentators on this blog about Alana is that she is amean-spirited, calculating, evil, selfish, lazy, merciless, compassion-less, insensitive misandrist and those were the nicest descriptions of her I could find.

      • The turtle is apparently a protected species in that area, so it was never a menu possibility for anyone. My guess is the crew found the turtle [they sure do manage to find a lot of critters to photograph, though the contestants can’t seem to find hardly any at all] and then both encounters were manufactured for TV content. Both turtle encounters were ludicrous from start to finish. I had several “WTF??” moments watching; neither Alana nor Shane would let a meal go after being hungry for several days [he’s not stupid, and she’s too selfish], and neither Jeff nor EJ is stupid enough to let a captured meal out of sight. Later I read about the turtle being protected and it all made sense. It’s a shame they don’t show the contestants actually gathering the food they do find, and teach the rest of us some skills, but I guess they don’t think we’re intelligent enough to enjoy watching REAL stuff, and just prefer to try to create a naked soap opera instead. Two thumbs down, N&A producers!

        • The Red Footed Tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria), is not protected in Columbia and is a common food for both the Jaguar and the native peoples. If you see one you can catch one unlike if you can see a Capybarra. A tortoise of any kind is as easy to catch as a rock.

  7. I love this show, but way too many commercials! I felt bad for Shane, but at least he went out on a high note, not wanting to drag down his buddies. And Eva… she can start my fire anytime! Yeowza

  8. Kellie, Beware! I hope everyone is aware that the person writing as EMA NYMPTON (Not my name spelled backwards) is likely to be Alana herself. Whoever they are they are a venomous TROLL playing games at everyone’s expense. Just the kind who would condone Alana and Danielle B’s evil behavior.

      • J.C.-
If it is Alana, I’d love to interview her and get her real story out! I’m sure that so much editing is done by the show’s producers and even the most benevolent storyline can be twisted by a few clever or non-sequitur edits. After Phaedra Brothers appeared on Naked and Afraid, she contacted me because she thought her experience was misrepresented by the show. I was thrilled to interview her and post her thoughts about the experience.

I don’t know Alana, and hope that it’s just the producers making her look bad. Now that Shane and Dani are gone, it will be interesting to see if Alana’s storyline and attitude changes. Sadly, I’m not holding my breath, which bums me out, I was “Team Alana” after her first appearance.

On her first N&A experience, once her partner Keith left, Alana lay around her camp until it was time for extraction. I think the producers skipped over most of those days, because it was boring TV, but smart survival.
        https://www.channelguidemag.com/2014/03/30/naked-afraid-season-2-episode-3-recap/
This time, the producers can’t skip over anyone’s “lazy survival” days because the rest of the participants have their own storylines going on.

  9. I’m glad that the show has it’s followers including me. but being and traveled around the world, XL is scripted and edited for entertainment purposes and it sure does, these guys are well protected in those environments, just a simple thing that the producers would not let happen would let those guys be in the water trying to trap an ‘electric eel’ unless they want a fatality on their hands, those are knifefishes and do not shock, glad that it’s a good show but is slowly becoming more and more predictable just as most so-called reality shows, that still does not make watching those two freeloaders show up at Piranha lake more than likely by jeep, every show have got to have it’s villains I guess, hehe.. peace out!!

    • Did you know that an electric eel is in the order Gymnotiformes, which includes five different families of weakly electric knife fishes including the family Gymnotidae — a family that includes the electric eel? While the electric eel (electrophorus electricus) is properly categorized as a “knife fish” and not an eel… that is true of the entire species that we call the “electric eel”. The risk of serious injury from an electric eel is low, and it’s safe to assume that all participants of the show have passed medical screenings.

Which species of knife fish do you believe they captured, if not electrophorus electricus?

      • I’m glad you know how to google but certainly would like to see you try to grab an electric eel by hand.

        • I’m glad that I know basic facts, and know how to find them when I otherwise would not know what I’m talking about — as you know, people who don’t tend to make foolish and ignorant statements. I see that you have stopped carrying on about how the eel at issue was a “knife fish” and are no longer even suggesting that it was not an electric eel.

It’s great that you can find a video on the Internet that posits that voltage is deadly, without regard to either amperage or the duration of a shock but, as with your ignorance of the fact that the electric eel is a knife fish, the facts are what they are. As breathless and hyperbolic as the video is, even it references the risk of multiple shocks and that the primary risk is not of electrocution but of drowning.

  10. I think that Shane probably wasn’t as crazy as the show’s editing made him out to be. Likewise I think his problems with his first group was really more Alana and Danielle’s fault. In particular, I remember one scene where Alana commented to the camera that she didn’t like Shane because he was making an effort to let things slide when she was irritating him, in the interest of getting along, and that was somehow false. I think the fact that he was able to work so well with Jeff and EJ is pretty strong evidence that Alana and Danielle were the problem in that grouping.

      • A candle loses nothing by lighting the flame of another candle.

Alana gives strong women a bad name. You don’t have to be insensitive, selfish, cruel and indifferent to others to be strong. Indeed, Alana is the example men and women use to illustrate strong women are assholes. It’s no wonder some refer to her as a misandrist. On this show examples of strong women are: Dani Julien, Eva Rupert, Laura Zerra. A strong person doesn’t look out only for him or herself: a strong person looks out for everyone. Strength does not come from winning. Strength comes through hardships. Overcoming conflict, interpersonal or otherwise, is a sign of strength. Indeed, the best examples of strength on this show until now have been Dani Julien, Eva , Laura, Jeff and EJ and Shane. The qualify all these individuals have in common is faith (not despairing) and helping others.

      • Or Alana is a vindictive, shameless, selfish person who deserves to lose in life. Perhaps Alana isn’t as bad as editing made her out to be, but given the captured comments on the show out takes, editing seems more real to the point than not. Shane did all the work on the shelter while Alana and Danielle did nothing, then used it to shelter from rain while knocking on Shane. Danielle being sick of course, and could not even muster a thank you for Shane’s efforts in getting mangos, even though they weren’t ripe yet, continued to think Shane was a bad person. Danielle sure wasn’t going around foraging for food. Alana let a major protein source go by letting the turtle run away, then not sharing fish with Shane, all the while eating plenty of the eel Shane helped kill. She was noticeably quiet about eating what Shane helped provided. Shane, maybe by editing, never demonstrated he was a misogynist.

        • there i go making up things about Alana eating eel shane helped kill. i’m not a good eyewitness.

      • It’s interesting to me that somebody who comes into an online discussion to defend Alana would believe that the best way to do so would be to insult and belittle Shane.

Have you ever heard of the children’s book, “The Little Red Hen”?

“When the bread was finished, the tired little red hen asked her friends, ‘Who will help me eat the bread?’ ‘I will,’ barked the lazy dog . ‘I will,’ purred the sleepy cat . ‘I will,’ quacked the noisy yellow duck….”

I’m not sure where Alana would have ended up had Shane’s new group followed the lead of the little red hen and told her to catch her own food, rather than sharing their protein. Twice.

      • Or that Alana (aka: Ema Nymton) is a misandrist of the first order, a woman that hates all men.

        • I agree entirely.

I’m sure she’s quite good at ‘using’ them, though, and putting on a ‘sweetie-pie’ face, when she needs to, then throws the men away, when they either start rebelling, or she no longer needs them to achieve he desired end.

Disappointed (very), at how fast Danielle went over to Alana’s ‘side’.
I’d hoped she was better than that, & used to think she was sweet.

          Not anymore,..at ALL!

      • Was sad to see Shane go.. Those woman he was grouped with were awful & brought nothing to the table!! as you can see in every other group they ALL worked, and were not lazy! 2 mean girls.. had Shane been with the men the whole time he would have thrived, but he was surrounded by petty ladies who just sat around!! This challenge is about thriving in that environment not sitting and being lazy

      • OR, he hates woman that are:
        – insensitive
        -Lazy
        -Inappreciative
        -Rude
        -Cruel (verbally & otherwise)
        -Vindictive

I could go on, but I’m sure Alana & her ‘funky’, will show us more of what they’re like.

    • Jack says, “I think that Shane probably wasn’t as crazy as the show’s editing made him out to be.”

There’s an acronym that is used in twelve-step programs to help people do a quick inventory about why they’re upset – “H.A.L.T” – Hungry, angry, lonely, tired. The suggestion is that before you get angry with another person you do a quick inventory to see if there’s something else that might be causing you to overreact.

My point is not that Shane was having inappropriate outbursts. To the contrary, I think he might have felt better had he not bottled up his feelings. My point is that he was hungry, angry, lonely and tired — four factors that, in combination, are likely to make anybody seem a bit crazy, no editing required.

  11. RE: The “bi….s” and Shane. The worst part was when Shane left and did not have time
to build a shelter and it rained that night. He was jumping up and down and shaking
with the cold. Cut to the two “bi…s” saying how warm and dry they are under Shane’s original
shelter. They should have run and gotten Shane when it started to rain. What a lack of humanity
    and compassion those two have!

    • Or… what Dani has said on her Facebook page about being the one to handle the actual shelter building while Shane gathered materials is accurate and Shane had no idea how to build a proper shelter on his own.

The video evidence would suggest this since Shane’s second “shelter’ was a hammock. Either he couldn’t build a proper shelter on his own or he didn’t bother to make a decent one when he was going off in the woods and preparing to survive on his own.

Given that Shane couldn’t start a fire with a fire-starter and has admitted to his lack of survival training, I’m inclined to think the former.

      • Action speak louder than words and every individual who watch the show was witness to Alana cruel and insensitive behavior that she label being a strong woman ,Ema Nymton or Alana you are such a pathetic troll, our action reflect the way we are raise.

      • So if Shane was chopping down all the trees and bringing back to camp, which is the most physically demanding and labor intensive part of the shelter building, and if Dani was constructing the shelter, then what was lazy, no good Alana doing? Dani was building the shelter while she was laying around sick?

The video evidence Shane’s second shelter was a hammock proves not that he couldn’t make a proper shelter, but he used a very practical and common single person platform for the jungle. Couple this with his loss of body fat and muscle deterioration by that time, it was the most efficient rather than trying to build an elevated platform requiring tons of wood chopping.

      • It’s interesting to me that a defender of Alana would lose track of the fact that this was a team activity, not an individual venture.

The point of a team is that each member has strengths and weaknesses, and that by working together the group can capitalize on each member’s strengths while minimizing the impact of each member’s weaknesses. You will note that the show gave “PSR” ratings to each group, with those scores influenced by how well group members were working together.

When Shane was actually able to join two other people who were interested in minimizing drama and working as a team, by all appearances he did very well.

      • I thought Dani was six for three whole days and had to rest? How could she have built the shelter even if supplied with the materials? What makes you think he couldn’t make a fire with a fire starter? Oh, that’s right, you can’t make a fire with a fire started that Alana won’t let you use even when the fire starter was given to the group not to one person.

  12. I disliked Shane until last night. I thought he was heroic last night. Self-less. He agreed to drink the water to be sure it was ok. And then he left because he did not want to hinder his team. Impressive.
I cannot keep the brown-haired girls straight.
Jeff pretty impressive too – -good karma to share the eel.

  13. I think someone said it best, Alana is a bully. Shane lacks some social skills to handle such situations. And it’s so sad to see a hard working grown man being bullied because he lacks the social skill. From the beginning Alana was badmouthing Shane to Dani. Then the two of them laughed at him behind his back. They always put him down saying they didn’t need him after he already built their shelter. What do they do, make some hats. Survival is lazy on the 21 days challenge, but this is 40 days. No more of that laying around complaining about starvation crap. Go hunt, go get food, thrive for goodness sake. It’s tough seeing Shane work all day chopping trees down to improve the shelter while the girls just lay around chit chatting and badmouthing Shane. Shane came back asking for help and she just wanted to drive him away. Alana is a horrible human being.

Shane biggest mistake: choosing a bow for survival tool instead of fire starter. Seriously, you know that you can’t make primitive fire, then that should be your number 1 priority.

    • Alana is a bully and a bitch and, if she makes it, owes it in part to Shane’s sacrifices.

    • That’s right, Alana is a terrible human being, or at least the producers of the show edit the clips and portray her to be. His two remaining teammates, should take her out in the woods and one hold her down wile the other one dose her up the butt with a stick.

        • Ya know what, people on here say ten times worse things than I do but because I use a slightly harsher tone and tell it like it is. Everyone gets all up in the air.
I half to say to that. ” I’ts time to go inside and take off your sweater. Mr. Rodgers is on.”

      • Joe, unless you are a member of ISIS or Al Queda the raping and pillaging days of “the northern hemisphere wild type” men are gone. I agree with Elizabeth.

        • Oh, just grow a set. Only expressing my opinion. If you don’t like it. Nobody is forcing you to listen.
One of his old teammates should just casually mention that to her so she’s looking over her back the duration she’s on the show. Just like when you slightly cross the mob. Someone in it whispers in your ear; “Your wife better

  14. Alana is a bitch. Simple. She and shane may not get along but he just ignored her. He was so down trodden he just hung his head when near them. When he came back in a early episode and asked for help a decent person ” who was a good survivalist” as alana claims to be would put their differences aside in order to prosper as a group. In stead she just gloated. Since then she has done nothing but talk about shane. When he eventually tapped out a decent person would have said sorry we didnt get in good luck or just done nothing. Instead she just laughed asif to say haha i won. She is a lazy bitch who couldnt survive without the others end of. I highly suspect she is a feminist also.

    • You’re watching a different show than me. Alana didn’t say anything about Shane until after the group of five brought it up. Though apparently Shane – despite trying to avoid them – did apparently see fit to complain about Dani and Alana. At least according to Eva.

      • Au contraire: it is you that is not watching the same show. When Jeff and EJ ran into Shane he told them that he didn’t want to get into the drama and didn’t tell him what had transpired beyond the fact the team had split up. Jeff and EJ noticed that upset when all 5 were together and it was Alana’s words and actions that laid bare to EJ why the situation had become so intolerable to Shane and that’s when Shane was invited to join their group.

      • Ever hear of editing? You do know it’s a filmed production. Not an unrecorded live broadcast.
Notice how I said “unrecorded live, live broadcasts can still be doctored to appear as someone wants them to.

  15. It turns my stomach to see people like Alana on this show. She really annoyed me. I hate bullies and Shane was just a forthright person that didn’t deserve the horrible treatment that Alana primarily gave him…with her manipulated sidekick, Danielle.Pathetic.Too bad Alana didn’t tap out. Many would not have missed her

  16. We were treated to a very ugly scene of Shane collapsed with one leg partially in the lake Alana and Danielle B gloating over his misery. Seems inhumane and very cold to me. The editors will be blamed but the editors cannot show clips of things that do not happen. Whether you like Shane or not It is a reflection of anyone’s character who condones and excuses evil behavior toward another person. AB and DB will not be bitten by a venomous snake-professional courtesy.

    • I think this best sum up Alana and the few that support her. Instead of putting away differences, she gloat at others misery. I’m so glad Shane was taken in by Team Alpha. Had they been together from the beginning the three of them would be thriving in a badass shelter with food a plenty.

Bring back Shane for XL 2 and pairs him up with Darren, please. Crazy, misunderstood people, must be together.

After watching XL the regular naked and afraid is boring.

    • You’ll note that we never actually see Alana and Dani in the same shot as Shane during that scene. They just showed Alana and Dani looking out over the water and then cut to Shane lying down… and then play a voice over of Alana talking about Shane looking terrible that was clearly shot at a different point in time.

      • So, not my name, the producers spend an inordinate amount of time searching, editing and splicing just to erroneously make Alana appear to be a bitch? Naw, she doesn’t need any help in that regard. Try again Alana.

      • You may be correct, but neither Alana nor Dani showed any compassion toward Shane during that whole period. In contrast, Shane climbed trees to get mangoes, albeit unripe ones, when Dani was down sick and showed compassion toward Dani when she was sick.

The key indicator of a person’s integrity and self-worth is represented by the fact Alana did not share fish with Shane, while she had no problems eating a bunch of electric eel, Shane had helped capture.

        • Ah – Alana wasn’t there for the first eel Shane “helped” with. And “helped’ is a bit strong since he was sitting on the sidelines until Jeff and EJ wore the thing down. The second eel was all Jeff’s doing.

Now who is having trouble remembering things?

          • I’d like to see Alana kill anything beyond 2 minnows. What is her contribution other than fodder for us?

  17. I second that Pat.
I would love to have Shane as a partner. Those 2 girls are useless. How about Jeff, God is only providing for Him, And he then gives food to others.
He had better rethink what God is doing.
How about naked yoga, glad it was a blur, lol.

    • Right, Jeff, goes nuts and starts screaming when he catches something then wants to complain about having to share, the simpering little twit, then shares like a “good” Christian.

  18. Kellie,
I like and enjoy the show and your reviews. I will share something with you. While hiking in the Superstition Mountains (Arizona) 1/4 mile from my house; I came upon a fable written on a piece of cardboard. It seems to apply no one in particular.

    My name is Dummy.
I am on a reality TV show seeking fortune and fame: I hope I do not end up crippled and lame.
Under stress, I cannot think; so everything goes to the brink.
My lack of survival skills; produce drama and thrills.
I walketh among bugs, disease and possible death; I fear not, for I am the biggest fool to ever draw breath.
Although I am starving and my nose and stool are runny; I am confident DC will make lots of money.
My IV’s and transfusions runneth over, for I will have tropical diseases and poor health all the days of my life.
    END

      • The fable given below the greeting!!!
I erred in typing the last line. It should read:
My IV’s and transfusions runneth over; I risk tropical diseases and poor health all the days of my life, until it is over.

        • I cannot believe how Alana is making women look. She reminds me of the girls I went though school with. Laughing at people who are socially unlike her. In other words mean, evil thinking they are all that when they are nothing more than selfish uncompassionate lazy witches. She needs to apologize to Shane. Perhaps she didn’t realize how mean she was being. We are here on earth to love each other.

      • Doesn’t it make you wonder who wrote that fantastic sign? It makes me want to ask so many questions!

  19. My first comment, let me just say XL is AWESOME. I like watching Naked and Afraid, but setting up a man and a woman feels more like a dating show than survival. Being heterosexual, I thought pairing up the same sex would be weird. But XL proves that isn’t the case. Best teams so far are Jeff/EJ/Shane, Team Bromance, and Laura/Eva.

It’s amazing seeing the group dynamics unfold. It must feel the same when the first people first left Africa. I am sad to see Shane leave, been pulling for him the whole way. But I hope Team Alpha can stay independent. Really, this is a survival show, not a powwow. You got to do what’s best for survival. Keeping a smaller group would be best and make everyone accountable.

Like everyone else, I detest Alana and Dani. Dani wasn’t so bad the first time around, but I thought she was a show off when at the end she said she glad she taught Charlie a few things. She was lucky to have Charlie on that show. This time around she and Alana became those annoying girls in high school. Alana is always mean spirited and manipulative and Dani just follows along like a giggly dumb high school girl. Even though Shane tapped out, he won this challenge, because everyone is on his side.

    • Add a few more things:

I can’t believe Discovery didn’t cast Darren. He was awesome losing on 6 pounds. Imagine pairing him up with Shane and the Duct tape guy. Shane would build an incredible shelter, Darren kills everything in sight, and the duct tape guy make them shoes, cups, and everything imaginable.

I also like the guy that kill an alligator by himself.

I hated Honora at first, but I was sad to see her go. She was annoyingly childish, but she did pulled her weight in trying to get fruits and stuff, but the boys just rejected it.

      • I have to disagree with you regarding Honora – she had no business being on this show. She acted like a petulant child presumably because she didn’t get positive reinforcement for her actions so what she does is to go on an act of terrorism and sabotage. I hope she gets whatever medical help she needs because she really needs to grow up and act like an adult.

        • You are right. She is a spoil brat that acted out because she didn’t get the positive reinforcement she come to expect. But I still feel bad that she tried to fit in with the boys and they couldn’t make it work.

        • I do not vouch for the truth of it. I saw something on Honora’s
Facebook that said she had a very serious attack of Lyme’s disease when she was very young and had many recurrent attacks over the years which has an effect on the mind and she needs medications. That would explain her erratic and mindless behavior. If true it would mean DC producers are inept at screening candidates or they are very callous in concern for Honora, Chris, Luke and Matt (who was her partner in the 21 day challenge which she failed). Somewhere someone knows the truth?

          • Psst, want to know the truth. The truth is the show is fake. It is most apparent in the males. While they do have significant amounts of weight loss. You don’t have to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere with only your wits to survive, to experience that. While their facial hair grows the hair on their head doesn’t. Look closely, aside from it staying short. It is very neatly end evenly trimmed. Look closely at the hair on Shanes head in this episode. A prime example of what I’m talking about.
Now on to the women. A little harder but the biggest example is while they experience weight loss they maintain throughout the show nice round voluptuous bottoms.

      • Allen-I loved Darrin too! He was strange, but a great survivalist. If Naked and Afraid XL gets good ratings for Discovery, I think he’d be a shoo-in for version 2.0.

        • Kellie, I see you and I both like competent “strange” people (Darrin Reay). I have found many of them to be just “different” and marching to a different drummer. They are usually self contained and are labeled “eccentric.”

    • Am I the only one who noticed that Team Shane’s on-going narrative totally fell apart this week?

      * Alana and Dani are lazy and Shane gave them everything! – Oh, did Shane run across the savanna at night, weave their protective clothing and prepare their food?

      * Alana is only out for Number One! Except Alana has been going out of her way to look out for Dani B, being the only person to go looking for fruit and nuts with her.

      * Alana is so manipulative and trying to turn everyone against Shane! Except Alana and Dani didn’t say anything about Shane to the Party of Five until they mentioned that Shane had told them about Alana and Dani and Eva said it sounded like that had a disagreement to which Alana just agreed without elaborating. (Incidentally, anyone notice that means Shane was complaining to a group of strangers about his former teammates? Now who is turning who against who?)

      * Alana and Dani are man-haters! Except they seem to be getting along okay with Luke and Chris – the later of whom is rather notorious for not playing get along to go along with women he doesn’t respect.

      • I could refute all of your points, but the bottom line is Alana is constantly complaining about Shane whenever she gets a chance. If Shane had been with the guys from the beginning that group would have easily been the best. Lastly, Alana is a huge bitch

        • Holy crap are you all serious? Alana is one of the most impressive people on the show. Shane has got some serious bipolar stuff going on, and completely genderized all his BS and projected it onto his female partners from day one. Yeah Alana wasn’t sweet and pleasant to him when he wanted to come back, but she deserves a medal for not punching him in the face. Sounds like this guy is the new patron saint of misogyny for a couple of you guys, and that’s fine – especially when you see how that worked out for him; they were right, he was wrong, and the proof is in the final result.

          • Alana is looking out only for herself. If Shane’s tapping out is directly related to the miserable experience he had with those two girls. Case in point:
When Dani was sick it was Shane who climbed that mango tree to bring her back some fruit – what was there answer, “I can’t eat it – it’s not ripe.!” Are you kidding me. When Alana went and caught fish – knowing her partner is a vegetarian what did she say with glee in her voice: “more for me.” Alana eats meat but she let that turtle go – for what reason other than to spite Shane who was working building shelter, foraging for food, while they just laid there. If she is a survival expert she knew that in that environment you don’t let food go. And she knew her partner who was expending more energy than her needed to eat. She’s a selfish, calculating and unmitigated (insert word here).

As to Shane’s bi-polar issues: he’s a strange bird to be sure but I would trust him as a partner. Even in his depleted condition he helped the Alpha male team. And despite his condition, by digging that hole, took care of his teammates for the rest of the show by providing them easy and fresh water thus allowing them to conserve their energies and focus on hunting and foraging for food. It is thanks to him that his teammates are ahead of the game. It is also thanks to them working as a team and not being condescending and judgmental towards each other that they are doing better than the mega team. He tapped out because he didn’t want to be a hindrance to them as much as he did it for himself.

If it wasn’t for these men and their generosity the other team would be in worst shape than it already is.

          • Are you serious Alana was a totally bitch,As long as Shane work his ass off doing all the work and she laid around in the shelter he built she was fine,I agree with the poster that said she was out for #1,herself.She should feel right at home with the snake that are crawling around her.

          • Shane made two big mistakes that hurt his chances of survival, both of which would have had Alana squawking about his “issues”. First, he gave up a source of protein that no sensible survivalist would have rejected in order to appease his partners. Had he eaten the turtle, it is very possible that he would not have ended up in the starvation mode cycle that prevented him from being able to bounce back when he finally received some meat protein. Second, he gave them a choice as to whether he rejoined the group in the shelter he built. He should have told them that they were free to pick either of his camps, but that he was going to stay in the first shelter he built — the one that would have protected him from the storm.

We can argue that Shane should have been more impervious to Alana’s constant barrage of childish personal attacks, her sniping, her minor and major sabotages (by all appearances she hoped to sabotage his joining with the “Alpha Male” team; it’s impossible to believe that she didn’t know how he would be sabotaged by her insistence that he not eat the turtle) — but he made a point of trying to contribute, and when he was able to partner with two people who weren’t acting like a junior high mean girl and her eager follower, his personality quirks didn’t get in the way of his being a great partner.

I suspect that had the teams been assigned differently, and had any one of the Alpha males been assigned to Alana’s team instead of the all-make group, you would have seen him take an approach that would have made Alana very unhappy — sometimes, rather than trying to ignore the abuse and condescension, you need to respond with a healthy dose of “STFU”.

          • You can’t be serious. Impressive really. She’s an impressive disappointment that’s about it. And she said it herself she’s lazy. Did you see how EJ looked at her when she snarked about Shane, that’s why they won’t join with those frauds. Where’s your protein oh that’s right you have to mooch off of the 3 man team.

          • Sorry Odum but Alana was never even civil towards Shane. Usually we treat people that have obvious personality problems with compassion and understanding not attempts to make them feel even worse. If there ever was a perfect example of a misandrist it’s Alana.

        • I know Shane on a personal level and I can tell you he is a completely SANE and genuinely nice guy.

          • Thanks for that Loya. I don’t see any reason that Shane should have been as cruelly as Nasty and her student treated him. When they came upon him, obviously exhausted and out of it, what did they do? Try to see if he was ok? No. Call for help? No. Alert anyone to his distress? No. But later we can see the two of them gloating over his tapping out. Nasty and her crony surely and unmistakably showed their true colors.

          • Ah! That explains it. You’re sticking up for your friend.

Admirable, but we all know what sort of boy Shane really is.

          • I was sad to hear Shane say back to EJ “if only she did” or something like that, after EJ said, pointing the camera at Shane, “a face only a mother could love” Shane mentioned his issues with his mother and that affects his relationships with women.

          • Not sticking up for anyone. He can certainly fight his own battles. It’s just funny to see all this inaccurate speculation.

          • You’re not really that stupid are you? You haven’t watched the same episodes we have? The woman (Alana) is cruel, vicious, petty and cold. If you haven’t seen her shortcomings go back and re watch the episodes.

        • You’re not doing anything to help the contention that all of Shane’s fans are illiterate bigots. You do know that, right?

          • Not as illiterate as someone so afraid of using their own name that they have to resort to “not my name” spelled backwards. Jeez, is that you Alana?

          • You are truly a disturbed individual,I learn early in life never argue with and idiot, any one listening wouldn’t know the different,

I commend Shane on his strong will power and strength, because I don’t think I could have been as nice,I would have tapped out sooner than he did after I kick her ass,

      • So Alana is such a saint to go with Dani to look for fruits and nuts, but she wouldn’t go fish or hunt with Shane? Seems Shane foraged while Dani was sick while Alana sat around. She also let go a major protein source in releasing the turtle.

Shane might not have woven the girls clothes, but he got got the shelter material, fire wood, etc., doing all the labor intensive and physically demanding tasks which enabled both Alana and Dani to sit around “surviving” or simply being lazy.

We don’t see Alana or Shane complaining. We know other people perceived there was definite tension between them. No difficult to notice.

Alana and Dani getting along with Luke and Chris. This is a function of new group dynamics and the fact there is a huge group of people who are pretty on their survival game; moreover, they walked into a situation where the alpha male group has been sharing major protein with everyone. Can’t talk crap when you are low peg in the pole among the larger group. They are boht outsiders and walking in to an established situation. That doesn’t mean they get a long with the Luke and Chris, but says a great deal about the fact they need Luke and Chris and the other three girls plus alpha males to survive the remaining days.

        • It’s also much harder to bully 5 to 7 other people. Much easier to destroy someone unable to defend themselves and keep them mentally off balance.
