ABC Family borrows from the best in its new single-camera series Kevin From Work. In the cute and clever pilot, Kevin (Noah Reid, Backpackers) accepts an overseas job and crows, “I finally get to leave the worst job in history!” In an act of alcohol-fueled bravado, he pens an admission of love to his office crush, but when the dream job falls through, he has to return to his old job and the fallout of his lovelorn confession.
Reid describes Kevin as “the Everyman” who often falls victim to the adage that nice guys finish last. “Things don’t quite fall his way,” says Reid. And much of Kevin’s existence is hilariously cringe-worthy as mishap after mishap befalls him. “To me, for whatever reason, shame is an easily accessible emotion,” jokes Reid.
In the pilot, Amy Sedaris makes an uproarious appearance as Kevin’s lascivious boss and “is spectacular in everything that she does,” gushes Reid. “She’s got this incredible, spontaneous energy that takes you off guard and we laugh so hard, it’s tough keeping it together with her.” Paige Spara plays Audrey, the object of Kevin’s affection, who is more charming than a flock of animated birds. And yes, there will be animated birds, it’s that kind of show.
Kevin From Work feels like a pastiche of beloved sitcoms, most notably the workplace longing of The Office’s Jim Halpert for coworker Pam, and the will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic of Ross and Rachel from Friends. And if you add in elements of the cult classic Office Space, you’d have Kevin From Work pretty well described. And this is a good thing.
