The Whispers Season 1 Episode 9 Recap: Broken Child

Thomas is hanging by a thread in a hospital room after being shot by Lena this week on “The Whispers.”

If he dies, perhaps so does the key to killing Drill once and for all.

Sean stays with him as Dr. Benavidez tries to keep him alive. Claire, Lena and Wes can’t just sit waiting and wondering. They go together (awkward) back to Thomas’ house to uncover clues.

Claire finds a notebook with a picture of Thomas at the institution he spent 10 years of his life. The trio next head to the facility and find the room he stayed in. Lena encounters a rabbi, who she begins telling her problems to like Dr. Phil. He tells her you don’t need to light all the candles to see your way out of the darkness. This was what was written on the picture of Thomas. Lena finds out he knew Thomas

Claire and Wes peal wallpaper in Thomas’ old room, which freaks out a resident. The rabbi tells them the picture they see is a dybbuk, which in Jewish mythology is an evil spirit that claims a soul. They then are under suspicion Thomas didn’t kill his brother, but Drill who took Elliot as a host.

Meanwhile Rollins visits the children’s wing of the hospital and locks eyes with a little girl with a mask made out of a paper plate (Creepy!). He follows Rollins into an elevator (I would have immediately gotten out of there.) and mentions her brother was having heart problems. She then injects him with a substance to knock him out. After completing her task, the girl’s brother miraculously comes back to life. She then tells him it’s his turn and presents him with his own paper plate mask.

The boy goes to find Thomas, who was moved by Sean and Benavidez to a room without electricity. He locks himself inside alone with Thomas. He says he has a question, which was how he killed the “first one.” Thomas tries to help the boy come to his senses and refuses to say anything. The boy then sent waves of electricity to his heart. Thomas is finally free.

Not all is lost as Claire and Wes remember the tree in the picture was the same as the one in the diorama, which had lightning rod and some wiring wrapped inside to conduct the current into the tree. They went to the actual site and saw it was blown up to confirm this in fact took place. The three decide they didn’t want to tell anyone, but the boss man was tracking them and sees the whole thing He goes to the president and reveals they have found out a way to kill drill. The only way to do it is if Drill takes on a permanent host. He asks the president if he was willing to sacrifice the life of one child for the lives of many.

Pretty sad to see Thomas perishes knowing the truth and that everything was taken away from him, including his family and childhood. Drill is no loveable imaginary friend. This we know.
