Now Available: New Episodes of Amazon’s Kids Series “Annedroids”

Annedroids

This morning, Amazon released Season 2 of its Emmy-nominated children’s series Annedroids. The series follows a STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum and there is much rejoicing in the Freeze household today — this season features 13 all-new, 30-minute episodes.

Annedroids

The live-action adventure continues with tween scientist Anne (Addison Holley, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) and her friends creating experiments in Anne’s fantastic junkyard laboratory. When Nick (Jadiel Dowlin) and Shania (perpetually hilarious Adrianna Di Liello) return to school after spending their summer in the junkyard, Anne finds new ways to stay in touch using Pidgely, a pigeon with a broken wing she equips with a rocket suit. Pal (voiced by Millie Davis, Orphan Black) ventures outside the junkyard and expresses a desire to be a real kid. Also this season, a mysterious robotics scientist offers Anne the opportunity of a lifetime, forcing Anne to make some tough decisions about her friends, family and future. Along the way, the kids use DNA to track a lost dog, experiment with dry ice, send an android into space, and  — in a nod to series creator J.J. Johnson’s previous hit, Dino Dan — confront dinosaurs in a nightmare.

When the series premiered last year, I was overjoyed to find an engaging show for kids aged 6-11 that is rooted in STEM principles.  It’s easy for kids to learn when they’re engaged, and my children eagerly learned about robotics, animatronics, and principles of physics and fell in love with the clever and inquisitive characters. Season 2 continues that excellence and once again, the series’ young actors are superb!

This season starts off with my boys’ current obsession — rockets, and in Episode 2, Academy Award-winner (and Mensa member) Geena Davis lends her voice as Professor Caroline Somerville of the Berrill-Ware International Online Academy for Next Generation Thinkers. In addition to being great actress and a general smarty-pants, Davis has long been an advocate for women in technology — she is a vocal proponent to increase the representation of women’s STEM-related roles in the media. So putting Davis in a role to inspire girls to seek out careers in math and science is casting perfection.
