Grimm Recap Season 4 episode 20 “You Don’t Know Jack”

After the stunt Juliette pulled on last week’s Grimm, attempting to burn down Nick’s life, I have to admit that there are only two fates I want to see for her: a) I kinda hope she stays evil, because at least she’s scary and fun, or b) she get’s killed. While she’s become truly horrible as a Hexenbiest, it sure beats having her mope around doing nothing. That said…

The monster squad, Nick, Hank, Monroe and Wu pay a visit to the burned out trailer. Inside, the devastation is substantial, but not a complete loss. As they survey the damage, intercut with scenes of the character’s past interactions with the objects in the trailer, the team realizes that many of the weapons and even some of the books have survived the fire. They decide to salvage what they can and relocate to the basement of the Spice Shop.

Meanwhile Juliette is at Nick’s and she’s got even more diabolical things in store. She logs on to his computer (Seriously Nick, you didn’t think to change your locks or your passwords?!) and sends a distress email to Nick’s Mom, who instantly replies that she’s on her way. Juliette deletes the email thread and leaves.

Two girls are working a lonely street corner on that cold Portland evening. We quickly learn that one of the girls is a Wesen when she Woges to warm herself. A car rolls up and the one who didn’t Woge takes off with the man in the car. Her friend is quickly approached by a shadowy man with a thick, very conspicuous British accent. She follows him to an empty lot where we see, from his POV, him slit her throat.

Back at the Spice Shop, Rosalee and Adalind are working on the potion that’s supposedly going to suppress Juliette’s powers. The two hash out their bad blood a bit, but Adalind seems to have softened, maybe because Rosalee is awesome, maybe she realizes her old ways weren’t cutting it, or maybe she’s just playing nice because she needs help and Hexenbiest are great manipulators. They reach the stage where they need one final ingredient: Adalind’s mom’s corpse. The dudes come in with their salvage from the roasted trailer and head for the basement, explaining to the ladies that Juliette has crossed the line. Back upstairs, they all agree that Adalind needs a safe place to hide from Juliette, but since Adalind has messed with literally everyone in the room, nobody wants to take her in. Nick thinks of the last place that Juliette would look for her….

… Bud’s place. Bud, Nick’s timid, pie-making Wesen friend, reluctantly agrees to give Adalind shelter while his wife is off visiting her sister in Ann Arbor. Bud is a little surprised about the situation with Nick and Adalind’s baby and the complicated relationship with Juliette, but, despite his increasing nervousness, agrees to the deal.

Back at the Hotel Deluxe, Juliette warns Kenneth that Nick’s mom is on the way and that she is not to be underestimated. Kenneth doesn’t flinch and instead asks Juliette to move into Adalind’s old room, promising Juliette a whole lotta payback.

Nick returns home, gun drawn just in case Juliette is there. He notices that his mouse pad is out-of-place, but he doesn’t quite know what that means. Or maybe he does.

Then there’s Renard, who comes to floating face down in a swimming pool.

The following morning, the boys are at the crime scene. The victim’s name is Marianne Casey, whose body was found by her friend and “fellow entertainer,” Heidi MacDonald, the other woman from the cold open. While talking to Nick and Hank, she inadvertently Woges, revealing herself to be a Wesen, specifically a Klaustreich, making Nick suspect the murder is Wesen related (aren’t they all?). Inspection of the body reveals that Marianne had her throat slit with a sharp instrument and her belly was cut open, leading the boys to hope that maybe this isn’t Wesen related. Needless to say…

Adalind’s mom’s casket has been disinterred. Rosalee, Renard and Monroe look on as Adalind has a long monologue/infodump with the dusty casket, where she basically rehashes her entire history as a terrible mother/person.

Back at the Cop Shop, Wu informs Nick and Hank that the victim’s uterus was skillfully removed by someone who was apparently left-handed. This gets Hank to thinking that the M.O. is familiar, in fact, it sounds a lot like Jack the Ripper’s MO, which is quickly confirmed by the Grimm equivalent of a Google search. They then begin to wonder if maybe Springheel Jack wasn’t just killing working girls, but maybe Wesen, and then they wonder if old Saucy Jack wasn’t possibly a Grimm himself. At this moment they would ordinarily head for the trailer, but they have to content themselves with going to the Spice Shop and hoping that they get lucky with the remaining books.

At the Spice Shop, Rosalee, Monroe and Adalind are each doing their best to not be the one who dissects the corpse. Rosalee eventually volunteers while Monroe and Adalind make puke faces as she removes the necessary organs and bits. Nick and Hank arrive just in time to spare Monroe the task of removing four ribs and he happily joins them in the basement to look at anything but Adalind’s dead mom. They begin their search for a Jack the Ripper type in the books.

Meanwhile, the girl who survived is back on the streets (apparently she doesn’t get time off for grieving) when a shadowy figure approaches her looking for a good time with a twist. She Woges but warns the guy with the conspicuous British accent that the “wild costs extra.” He introduces himself as Jack, and calls her by name, explaining that he’s been watching her and is none too pleased that she talked to the Five-0. He dispatches her quickly, slitting her throat with a scalpel.

In one of the surviving tomes, Monroe discovers a description of their guy, but from 1798. In it, the Grimm describes finding some strange deaths, particularly Wesen girls who have had their throats cut and their bellies opened. The Grimm comes across a soldier killing a prostitute is a similar fashion. When challenged, the soldier didn’t Woge and, when the Grimm stabbed him, smiled as if possessed, as if death meant nothing to him.

Upstairs at the Shop, the last of the rib bones are coming out of the grinder as powder. The boys come up to tell the ladies about their discovery. The girls start boiling the potion down when Adalind gets woozy so Nick makes her lay down. Monroe and Rosalee watch the potion bubble and are startled when an image of a skull forms in the soup. Adalind tells them that the potion is ready. Nick gets a call from Wu that they’ve found another body, this time it’s the roommate, so Hank and Nick split. Rosalee then suggest to Monroe that it might be a good time to get in touch with Trubel.

At the scene of the second murder, the boys reveal to Renard that they have no leads but they do have one doozy of a hypothesis. They give the Captain the lowdown on their Jack the Ripper findings and Wu wonders how they’re supposed to book a killer over 300 years old. Which is surprising considering how few bookings they make at all these days.

Nick and Hank return to the Spice Shop just as Rosalee, Monroe and Adalind are putting the finishing touches on their strange brew. In order to make sure the potion works, Adalind volunteers to test it on herself. She takes a deep drink, then has to lie down as the effects kick in. She tells everyone to hold her down as she goes into intense convulsions producing what appears to be smoke with swirly, ghostly Hexenbiests writhing in it. The room shakes violently causing the potion to nearly topple, but Monroe catches it as the glass from the skylight shatters. Adalind comes to, groggy, and tries her powers but they seem to have dissipated. The potion works.

Juliette is back at the hotel giving Kenneth and some of his henchmen the rundown on Nick’s house and his neighbors. Everyone in the ‘hood is well-known except for three renters in a nearby house. ‘Three’s a charm,” says Kenneth, which, while exceedingly cryptic, only means bad things.

Nick is putting Adalind to bed at Bud’s. He assures her that he will keep her and her baby safe. As Nick is about to leave, Hank offers to stay with Bud and Adalind, “just in case.” Bud isn’t relieved.

Nick is home trying to reach Juliette on the phone. Her phone rings while she is hanging with the Royal Goon Squad, who seem to be arming themselves for a heck of a fight. Juliette asks Kenneth if she should answer but he tells her to let Nick stew for a bit more. Nick leaves a message then throws his phone against a wall. Smart.

The Mayor is having a press conference giving the yadda yadda about how they are all working super hard to get this killer. It seems that the press is up on the idea that there’s a Jack the Ripper in town. Renard starts bleeding from his old woulds, does a quick lean in on the mike and tells everyone to chill, then high tails it to the bathroom, in pain. He checks his wounds which are nasty and painful and makes a desperate phone call.

He arrives at Henrietta’s in serious distress. He shows her his bleeding wounds and she asks him if he’s been having bad dreams. He confesses that he has constant dreams of seeing himself get shot, and he mentions the dream hands that come reaching for him. Oh, and he keeps waking up in strange places, in or around water. Henrietta is clearly concerned , but before she can stop him, Renard freaks out and bolts from the house.

Back at the station, while Hank is briefing some patrolmen, Nick gets a call from Juliette. He tells her the good news, that they have a way to help her, and he asks her to meet him at the Spice Shop. She agrees, which you know can’t be good.

Henrietta is looking through her books, presumably for something to help Renard, when she hears her door open. She Woges, but too late as Jack is already there and slits her throat too. Her body crumples to the floor as we hear him sing a Jack-the-Ripper-themed lullaby.

Juliette walks into the Spice Shop where the gang is waiting. Nick pleads with her to take the potion and the others chime in that they only want to help. She mocks their helpful attitudes, and quickly realizes that they’re all in cahoots with Adalind and she wants nothing to do with the Grimm baby and the whore. She takes the potion from Nick then turns on her powers. The room starts quaking and she makes the jar with the potion in it float in the air. Rosalee rushes her trying to stop her from smashing the jar, but Juliette easily tosses her aside with her mind control and smashes the potion anyway. Juliette bellows that she likes who she is now. Nick draws his pistol on her because he doesn’t like it, but she uses her Hexenbiest powers to control the gun in Nick’s hand. She forces him to point the weapon in an unknown direction….and fires.
