5 Questions With … Will Estes of CBS’ “Blue Bloods”

Will Estes emanates such an all-American appeal that he’s been getting cast as the sweet boy next door since he was a kid. He was Will in The New Lassie and JJ on American Dreams. For the past five seasons he’s been Jamie Reagan, the youngest son in a family of cops on CBS’ Blue Bloods. His character walks a beat, though his dad and grandfather (Tom Selleck and Len Cariou) worked their way through the ranks to the top spot. One older brother was killed on the job, another (Donnie Wahlberg) is a detective, and his sister (Bridget Moynahan) is an assistant district attorney. Estes says he’s learned some working with Selleck. “We don’t have to take certain shortcuts and don’t play a reality, but a heightened sense of reality. He is so studied.”Will_Estes_web

  1. You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three titles. Which ones do you choose? “Sailing.” And any magazine about motorcycles or anything on two wheels. I love technology and anything in the sustainability sector. There are some catchphrases out there — green or eco-friendly — some have just become advertising tools. The word I come back to is sustainability. If it is not sustainable, we cannot keep doing it. And “Mother Earth News.”
  1. What has been your strangest fan encounter? I was folding my laundry in Manhattan one time at a laundromat and this woman looked at me and said, “You do your own laundry? That’s wonderful!” I said, “I think it would be wonderful if I didn’t do my own laundry.” I think I lost a fan that day.
  1. Tell us about a time you were starstruck. I have seen a lot of people and even worked with a few great ones. I was a young kid and I can’t remember why I was there — if one of my parents was meeting with someone on the set of “Family Ties.” No one asked him to, and I was told to be quiet, and Michael J. Fox asked who I was. And unprovoked, he took a Polaroid with me and signed it. The way he did it was so classy.
  1. What are three things you have to have in your fridge or pantry? I am a bit of a health-food nut these days. Cultured vegetables are in my refrigerator, local bee pollen and raw chocolate. They are fermented vegetables, the beneficial bacteria for your gut. I read that book “Clean Gut” by Dr. Junger.
  1. What was “Celebrity Jeopardy!” like? It was the moment of a lifetime for my dad. He’s a big “Jeopardy!” fan. I don’t know how on this green earth I won. My dad was pretty ecstatic.

  1. His intelligence shines thru no matter what character he plays. You can get a vibe from people and he seems like a stand-up guy. A guy you could throw a ball around with and then have a good chat over a coffee or a pint. Gorgeous, but that goes without saying 🙂

  2. I absolutely love Blue Bloods. I am not a big TV watcher but I have watched all episodes more than once. The entire cast play their roles beautifully. That includes the kids. I am a baby boomer so over the years I have always thought Tom Selleck is a very handsome man.
I hope it never goes off the air. :-)))

  3. Great show and great cast. I miss Jennifer Esposito, but Marisa Ramirez is great. We need both. Don’t want anymore cast changes or eliminations.
