Joining FX Networks’ growing roster of offbeat relationship comedies is Man Seeking Woman (Wednesdays at 10:30pm ET/PT beginning Jan. 14), a 10-episode FXX series based on former Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich’s collection of short stories, The Last Girlfriend on Earth: And Other Love Stories.
How offbeat are we talking about? In Last Girlfriend, a story is told from the viewpoint of a condom in a teenager’s wallet. In another story, a man at a party discovers his ex-girlfriend brought Hitler as her date.
Jay Baruchel (This Is the End) stars as Josh, a 20-something hopeless romantic stuck in the bizarre labyrinth of single life. According to FX Networks, Josh’s fantastical quest includes “one-night stands, painful breakups, a blind date with a troll, time travel, sex aliens, many deaths and a Japanese penis monster named Tanaka.”
“I made it through the minefield that is being single in your 20s somehow,” Baruchel says, “so I have, let’s just say, I have plenty of experiences to draw upon for this. A lot of, yes, a lot of victories, defeats, ambitions, malaise, all sorts of – I have the whole panacea of living experiences I’d like to think that I can mine for this.” He can also mine past roles playing the single man looking for love in shows like Undeclared and movies like She’s Out of My League.
“So it’s like romance for lack of a better word – this whole stupid thing, there’s nothing like it,” Baruchel says. “You’re happier than you’ll be ever be. You’re sadder than you’ll ever be and, often, stuff in the middle. It’s something that applies to each and every single one of us and so I like to think that when people see this thing they will see at least one thing they went through. Ideally, a whole bunch of things they went through because I this show is about human nature and what it is to be single and to be one of these social animals we call humans.”
