Given its epic scope and colorful, fantasy-world backdrop, it probably makes sense that HBO’s hit Game of Thrones is becoming the first TV series to be showcased in IMAX.

Starting Jan. 23, and running for one week only, through Jan. 29, Jan. 29, two episodes from Season 4 of Game of Thrones, followed by the worldwide debut of a sneak-peek Season 5 trailer exclusively created for IMAX, will air in nearly 150 IMAX theaters across the country’s top markets (click here for screening info, and to buy tickets). The IMAX release of Game of Thrones will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology.

“We couldn’t think of a series more fitting than Game of Thrones to be the first presented in IMAX,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment, in a release. “The scope and production quality of the show is quite remarkable, which will be highlighted even further in select IMAX locations – allowing fans, as never before, to become a part of author George R. R. Martin’s world that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created for HBO.”

Game of Thrones Episodes Airing In IMAX

Season 4, Episode 9: “The Watchers on the Wall” takes place entirely at The Wall with the Night’s Watch hopelessly outnumbered as they attempt to defend Castle Black from the Wildings and features one the fiercest and most intense battle scenes ever filmed for television.

Season 4, Episode 10: The season finale, entitled “The Children,” features Dany coming to grips with the realities of ruling a kingdom, Bran learning the startling reality of his destiny and Tyrion facing the truth of his unfortunate situation.

UPDATE 1/14/15: Due to high levels of consumer demand, the Game of Thrones IMAX screenings have been rescheduled one week later than originally planned, and run a bit longer. Screenings will now launch Jan. 29 at 10pm and extend through Feb. 5. This will allow for an expanded roll-out upward of 200 IMAX theaters.
