Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Nominations

And so it goes – the latest Hollywood awards season news is out, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Nominations are in for the 20th annual show, and there are some interesting selections.

For the sake of full disclosure, I am a voting member of the group that annually hosts the awards, the BFCA (Broadcast Film Critics Association).

Hosted by Michael Strahan (the Super Bowl champion, Fox NFL Sunday analyst, and Live! with Kelly and Michael host) the awards will air LIVE on A&E on Jan. 15th at 9pm ET / 6pm PT. As a personal aside … my mom loves Michael, so I’m sure she will be watching … you should, too.CCMA2014

Special awards will be presented to Kevin Costner, Ron Howard and Jessica Chastain.

And it will be the perfect cap to a day for those that pull down an Academy Award nomination earlier that morning. Sometimes it can even soothe the Academy snub as it did in 2013 when the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Director was awarded to Ben Affleck for Argo literally hours after he failed to land the Academy nom.

The event has even featured a memorable lip lock between this year’s nominee Meryl Streep (Supporting Actress, Into the Woods) and Sandra Bullock (when they TIED for the Best Actress title in 2010 Bullock for The Blind Side and Streep for Julie and Julia). Yes, ties CAN and DO happen here. Oh and that other crazy stuff, too!

There is just no telling what can happen on this night, but on to this year’s nominees.
The field is strong and led by Birdman with 13 nominations including Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director and Actor in a Comedy.

The Grand Budapest Hotel follows with 11 nominations and Boyhood has 8 noms (including the coveted Picture, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories).

BFCA President Joey Berlin stated, “The members of the BFCA and our new partners at A&E are proud to salute wonderful films and performances in the traditional categories and a wide variety of popular genres including comedy, action and sci-fi/horror. Audiences love all kinds of movies – and so do we.”

As a member, I couldn’t agree more that going to theaters we like to be moved, but not only with tears in our eyes. We like to laugh, be scared and be amazed. And this year’s group of nominees did just that.

Here’s the list of this year’s nominees.
