Neil Patrick Harris to host variety series for NBC

Neil Patrick Harris certainly hasn’t been suffering for work now that How I Met Your Mother has ended. The actor can currently be seen on the big screen in the hit film Gone Girl; he recently finished a Tony-winning run on Broadway as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch; he confirmed two weeks ago that he will be hosting the 2015 Oscars; and yesterday NBC announced that the multi-talented performer will be hosting a new primetime variety series for the network.

Ten hourlong episodes of the as-yet-untitled series have been ordered. The program will be based on the popular U.K. series Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and will feature comedy sketches, game show elements, hidden-camera pranks on celebrities and A-list stars.

“As I watched [Takeaway], I couldn’t stop smiling. Now that I’ve seen many seasons, my face hurts. It’s a game changer,” said Harris, in a release. “Nothing like this has been done before, and its unique structure fits right into my random skill set. I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and have some fun!”

“The Saturday Night Takeaway format is already popular in many countries, including the U.K., Germany, Portugal, Italy and Belgium. We are delighted that its expansion to the U.S. includes the multi-talented star Neil Patrick Harris,” said Paul Buccieri, Chairman, ITV Studios U.S. Group and Global Entertainment, which will produce the series.

No air date for the series has been set at this time.
