What Happened to Hub Network?

Don’t worry, all will be explained.

Starting October, 13, 2014, the Hub Network is undergoing a name change and an image overhaul. Think of it as a makeover: what’s inside is mostly the same, but the outside looks different, and some may even say, “better.”

The Hub Network used to be called Discovery Kids waaaay back in 1996 and featured cool science-y and adventure-y shows for kids. In 2009-2010, Discovery and Hasbro paired up to make cool new shows for kids that were based on some of the most popular toys at Hasbro. And now, Discovery is taking over a little more, adding in more science at night (and less Blossom reruns? Sniff.) and the name is changing to Discovery Family Channel.

Below is the super-snoozy announcement that came from Hub Network (obviously this was written by boring lawyers, because the folks at Hub who are making awesome TV could never write something this dry.) I’ll do my best to break it down in awesome-speak (which is exactly how I talk at all times. Honest.)

  1. The Hub Network will become Discovery Family Channel on October 13, 2014.
  2. During the day, the network will air Hasbro-themed shows like My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop and Transformers Rescue Bots (yay!) and they’re going to produce new shows based on Hasbro favorites (double yay!)
  3. At night, the network will air programs about natural history, adventure, animals and science that appeal to kids and their families. This is pretty cool; more shows for kids = great. Some of the new titles that will air on the new Discovery Family Network are Superhuman, Time Warp, Flying Wild Alaska, Africa and Extreme Engineering: Biggest Reveals. I don’t know anything about these new shows, but they all sound interesting.
  4. The press release doesn’t mention the fates of L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour or Family Game Night. Season 4 of The Haunting Hour started on Oct. 4, so hopefully those two shows will be around for a while. They’ve been nominated for and won Emmy Awards, so everyone knows what awesome shows they are.
  5. The big scary realization out of all of this is that beloved sitcoms from the ’90’s like Blossom, Step by Step, Sister Sister and ALF may be squeezed out by science and left without TV homes. And based on the majority of comments below, a lot of people LOVE those shows. I fully admit to using reruns for classic sitcoms as my “decompression” TV that I relax to before bed, so I am feeling everyone’s pain. Where are fans going to get their fix now?!?

(NASDAQ: HAS) today announced The Hub Network will become Discovery Family Channel effective October 13, 2014.  The network will broaden its programming focus to serve families in primetime and continue to showcase Hasbro Studios award-winning children’s content in daytime.

During the daytime, Discovery Family Channel will offer a robust line up of brand new Hasbro Studios’ series as well as beloved library programming, including MY LITTLE PONY, LITTLEST PET SHOP and TRANSFORMERS RESCUE BOTS, while during primetime, the network will serve a growing family audience that began to develop under The Hub Network.  Primetime programming will draw from Discovery’s three decades of leadership in creating the highest-quality, real-world content that appeals to the entire family in the Natural History, Adventure, Animals and Science genres.  Initial series will include SUPERHUMAN, TIME WARP, FLYING WILD ALASKA, AFRICA and EXTREME ENGINEERING: BIGGEST REVEALS.

Under the executive management of Group President Henry Schleiff, Tom Cosgrove will assume the role of general manager of Discovery Family Channel and will manage all network operations and programming, working closely with the Hasbro Studios team as the new channel will prominently feature Hasbro Studios-produced content in daytime.  Schleiff has overseen the successful turnaround and growth of several networks within the Discovery portfolio.  Previously, Cosgrove served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Discovery Channel and Science Channel and has held senior leadership positions at ABC Family, Fox Family, Fox Kids and TV Guide Channel prior to his time at Discovery.  Most recently, he led 3net and 3net Studios.

The repositioning to Discovery Family Channel builds upon Discovery’s ongoing strategy to maximize its portfolio of channels to satisfy viewers and drive value for distributors and advertisers, while working alongside quality content partners to create long-term value.  The Hub Network has grown from nearly 56 million homes in 2010 to approximately 70 million U.S. homes today.  Since launch, the strong performance of Hasbro children’s content helped lift the network’s total day P2-11 delivery by +89% and for the past three years, The Hub Network has consistently been the most co-viewed children’s cable network among kids 2-11 watching with adults 18-49–a trend the partners plan to continue with Discovery Family.

  1. I want my HUB back. It was fine the way it was! Muppets Treasure was awesome was great. MLP was better on HUB. Lots of kids are complaining on what a bad channel it is now. I want to start an on-line petition to bring back HUB, Bring Back HUB….BRING BACK HUB!!!

  2. The channel sucks now. I am so angry, they took off strawberry shortcake berry bitty city, and now my little cousin is not happy at all about that. It was one of her main shows. Hate the channel now.

  3. why did u change hub!!! im so sad! like i LOVE my little pony and its not the same! people are even saying the reason season 5 on mlp is late is cause hub is still discussing if they should or not and if they dont make season 5 im going to freak out!!!! so please change it back:( and there even realseing new toys but not the show.

  5. I miss the HUB so much!! It was a wonderful decompression channel with comforting shows you can’t find anywhere else. I miss ALF, Lois and Clark, and Spooksville. Why would they mess with such a good thing, I don’t watch it at all anymore. It’s gotten to the point I don’t even check the channel to see if anything good is on, because there never is. What’s on in the evening I don’t feel is family television at all, it bores me I don’t expect kids to be entertained by it and it’s also the same stuff that’s on the other discovery and outdoor channels. Bring back HUB!!!

  6. I watched R. L. Stine’s the Haunting Hour which was a nice show to watch when I came home. This new lineup isn’t satisfying me & I hope they can do something soon.

  7. NnAfter reading this article I explained to my children what happened to their beloved show and they were very upset. We hadn’t had cable for awhile because of family budgeting, this is what we collectively decide we could live without for awhile. So imagine to our dismay w.. hen we excitedly got our cable and the first requested channel, of course The Hub. We turn to channel 130 and sum sciencecy show is on. My kids were dissatisfied to say the least! Don’t get me wrong my kids don’t mind watching a good informing show, but they were in the mood for their usual Hub lineup. Like sister sister, the haunting hour, spookesville, and Goodwin’s, these were our favorite. Now the overall channel is as my kids put it very crappy!!! Why would they do that, don’t they want to have jods? This is what my 7 yr old asked!

  8. Why? I love Blossom, Sister, sister, and Step by Step. This is so disappointing. I used to come home everyday from school, do my homework, then watch my two episodes of Blossom. I miss that 🙁

  9. We are so upset that the HUB has been replaced with another channel. We liked SMERFS, Lois & Clarke New Adventures of Superman, Alf, Sabrina, Laverne &Shirley, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Haunting Hour, My Little Ponies, Family Game Night, Hole in the Wall, evening movies, and our new favorite, SPOOKSVILLE.
    On Discovery Kids the wildlife and technological shows are interesting but not day after day. Once or twice a week would be fine for each type. We as mother and father enjoyed watching the HUB programs with our children. We found SPOOKSVILLE as a new program, intriguing and are especially sorry it wont be continued for another season due to this change of channel. HUB was our channel of choice for clean programming we could all watch.

I am sooooo disappointed with the new programming “slant” since the HUB is no longer in existence……..you offered shows that no other networks were offering: Blossom, Step by Step, Sister Sister………..shows you could actually watch with your children and then you just yank them off……I must say that none of the children in this household like ANY of the new programming and the network hasn’t been watched since……….

  11. Why did yoy guys change to the new program channel; I really enjoyed watching all the throw backs; it took me back to my teen years. You guys really messed up. You even took off Happy Days, and Lavern and Shirley. You lost a loyal viewer.

  12. We agree wholeheartedly with the other comments posted here. Hub network was the most watched channel in our house and we are mourning its loss. There are ZERO programs of interest on the new lineup and we do not watch the new channel at all. We hope the network will realize their mistake and bring back the refreshing 90s sitcoms such as Step by Step, Blossom, ALF, etc. The whole family enjoyed those programs and miss them very much. Its so difficult these days to find enjoyable programs on TV and Hub was our go-to channel for shows enjoyed by all ages. We are all hoping for its return.

  13. I can’t believe you guys changed everything good about this channel to crap!!!! My 6 yr old so enjoyed watching “Sister, Sister” and “Blossom”. She thought they were new and was excited to find out I use to watch these shows! I’m 30 and the shows brought back so many memories! Can you at least have the shoes run on the weekends?! Give us something. I hate this new format!

  14. I am very disappointed, I liked R L Stine’s The Haunting Hour, and Spooksville. I also liked the show “Parents Just don’t understand”. It was good for both parents and children. Thanks again for ruining a good thing!

  16. I stopped watching this network after they changed and took off step by step and Blossom a lot of my friends have stopped watching why did you mess up a good network with a lot of rotten shows nobody likes!

  17. I’m disappointed that the 90s shows are gone. My daughter discovered Blossom this past summer and she really enjoyed it. It was a quality show and I enjoyed watching it with her because it dealt with some of the timeless issues that teenager girls are faced with like boys, school problems, drugs, sex, etc. in a mature manner without being preachy. In today’s teen oriented shows everything seems to be treated as a joke and the parents, if they are even shown, are depicted to be incompetent and would rather be best friends with their kids than actually parent them. Please bring back some of the 90s shows, even if only one night a week.

  18. I can’t believe they got rid of the 90s at night! Being a kid that grew up in the 90s I really enjoyed the shows. They don’t make them like they used to. I look forward to watching these every night after I would put my kids to sleep. Wish they would bring these back as well as some others. Nickelodeon tried this for a while too with Melissa, Kenan and Kel and All That. Would love to see all these plus Salute Your Shorts, Hey Dude and Are You Afraid of the Dark! Until then I’m not going to watch this channel anymore!

  19. I can’t get my three year old to watch any show I’m this channel. Yet, my wife and I really enjoyed watching the 90s shows once the little one went to sleep. It was a routine. They couldn’t pay me to watch this new channel.
