“Guardians of the Galaxy” to be an animated series on Disney XD

Following the hugely successful Guardians of the Galaxy feature film this past summer, the popular heroes from the Marvel Comics franchise will be coming to TV in animated form, Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s head of television, announced today at New York Comic-Con.

The Marvel Animation series has begun production, and will feature characters Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax and, of course, Groot. The series is expected to premiere in 2015 on the Marvel Universe programming block on Disney XD.

“The movie and franchise quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. We’re looking forward to working with the great team at Marvel Television to deliver an engaging animated series that fans can enjoy each week,” said Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, programming and general manager, Disney XD, in a release.

“This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series,” said Loeb, also in the release. “After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they’ll get it.”

No word yet on the voice cast for the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series.
