TV viewers who were around in the early ’90s surely recall David Lynch and Mark Frost’s creepy, cult-favorite series Twin Peaks. (It may be remembered by some more for its definitely eerie ambiance than for its ultimately unsatisfying mystery, but the atmosphere, including the moody musical score by Angelo Badalamenti, often more than made up for plot deficiencies.) The series originally ran two seasons (1990-91) on ABC, and was followed by the 1992 feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
After 25 years, Twin Peaks is coming back, as a nine-episode limited series on Showtime, which made the announcement today through the video below, which captures some of the series’ ominous atmosphere.
Showtime says that series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and produce all nine episodes, and Lynch himself will direct each installment. The new Twin Peaks episodes will be set in the present day, and will “continue the lore of the original series, providing long-awaited answers and a satisfying conclusion for the series’ passionate fan base.”
No word yet on whether original star Kyle MacLachlan will be back as Agent Cooper to enjoy more of the titular Pacific Northwest town’s “damn fine cup of coffee,” or any casting news at all, at this point, but one would have to think this would pretty much be undoable without at least some of the originals back.
