U.S. TV coverage of vote for Scottish independence

Scottish independence from the United Kingdom, after a 305-year political union, is up for a vote on Sept. 18, and everyone from pundits and economists to The Simpsons‘ Groundskeeper Willie has weighed in on the financial, social and political pros and cons of such a move. But on Thursday, the people of Scotland will decide in a referendum whether their home country should be an independent nation or not.

In the United States, various news networks will have coverage of the vote for Scottish independence. Here are some of the outlets where U.S. viewers can keep up with the latest.

UPDATE 9/19/14: Scotland has voted “No” on independence, and will remain part of the United Kingdom.

BBC World News — Lucy Hockings is reporting live from Holyrood in Edinburgh throughout the day of the Scottish Referendum, giving BBC World News’ global audience the international perspective on this historic event (check your listings to see if you have the channel on your U.S. system). Then as the votes are being counted, Huw Edwards will bring audiences continuous, live coverage and comprehensive analysis in a special election program Scotland Decides from 6pm ET to 1am ET. Later on Friday, BBC World News will have continuing coverage of the result with Lucy Hockings in Edinburgh and reaction from reporters around the world. Coverage is also available here.

C-SPAN3 — C-SPAN3, along with cspan.org, will feature live coverage on Sept. 18 beginning at 5:35pm ET. The network will be simulcasting the BBC’s coverage of the results of the referendum through the evening, leading up to the final announcement expected around 1:30am ET.

CNBC — CNBC’s Chief International Correspondent Michelle Caruso-Cabrera will be reporting live from Edinburgh throughout the network’s Business Day programming on Sept. 18 and 19 to report on the latest voting and results.

CNN — CNN will have its anchors and correspondents in Scotland and England covering the polls and outcome across its networks. In Scotland will be Christiane Amanpour, Hala Gorani, Nic Robertson, Max Foster and Erin McLaughlin. In England will be Becky Anderson, Nina Dos Santos, Phil Black and Jim Boulden. They will appear across CNN and CNN International throughout the day.

CNN International — CNN International’s live coverage of the Scottish referendum continues Thursday with reporting from Christiane Amanpour, Hala Gorani and Max Foster from Edinburgh, Nic Robertson from a polling station in Glasgow and a number of reporters positioned across London and Europe monitoring reaction.

Fox Business Network (FBN) — FBN will air Special Report: Scotland’s Vote for Independence on Sept. 18 from 5am-9am ET. Network anchor Neil Cavuto will interview top business leaders and politicians to discuss the impact the referendum vote will have on the global economy. FBN’s Ashley Webster will provide live coverage from Edinburgh.

FOX News Channel (FNC) — FNC will present live coverage of the Scottish independence referendum on Thursday, throughout the day and when results come in. Contributions will be provided by Sky News, along with FNC’s foreign correspondent Amy Kellogg from Edinburgh, and FNC’s senior affairs correspondent Greg Palkot from London. Marianne Rafferty will anchor live from New York.
