Madam Secretary CBS Tea Leoni

The Naked Truth’s Leoni returns to series television after a 16-year absence, playing Elizabeth McCord, a former CIA analyst turned college professor (and a married mom) who unexpectedly rises to the role of U.S. secretary of state, in this drama co-executive produced by Morgan Freeman and Judging Amy’s Barbara Hall.

“I’ve always really enjoyed a fish out of water — a lively fish out of water — and by about page 2 of the script, I knew that’s what this was going to be,” says Leoni of being lured back to the small screen. “And Barbara’s writing is just, well, spectacular. I called [CBS Entertainment Chairman] Nina [Tassler] after my first read through the script and said I was in.”

Like Showtime’s Homeland and NBC’s new State of Affairs, Madam Secretary counts on viewers accepting Middle East unrest as the stuff of entertainment — and something subject to dramatic license.

Only time will tell if its solid cast can overcome any lingering apprehensions.

Madam Secretary premieres Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8pm on CBS
