FOX’s stylish crime series Gotham is more than just a Batman origin saga — it’s the story of rookie detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and his struggle against the tide of crime and corruption that threatens to consume Gotham City. It’s also the story of how The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), Catwoman (Camren Bicondova) and others emerged as criminal masterminds. Donal Logue and Jada Pinkett Smith also star.

What’s It All About? It’s the “Before Batman” story of Gotham City’s plummet into crime and corruption, and of the rookie detective, James Gordon (McKenzie), who will fight against the darkness and eventually ascend to police commissioner. Paired with a crooked partner in Harvey Bullock (Logue), Gordon forms a bond with young Bruce Wayne (Mazouz), who just witnessed his parents’ murder. The real driving force of Gotham, however, is the origin stories of the infamous rogues’ gallery of Gotham villains. How does teen Selina Kyle (Bicondova) go from snatching purses to become the nefarious Catwoman? What causes police forensics expert Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) to go rogue as The Riddler? And what turns meek mob lackey Oswald Cobblepot (Taylor) into the freakish perp The Penguin? Pinkett Smith stands out as rising mob boss Fish Mooney, and Taylor portrays The Penguin with panache. With the look and tone of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight film trilogy, the series will wow hardcore Caped Crusader fans.
