The CW is straying from its familiar supernatural and superhero shows by bringing the new dramedy Jane the Virgin into the mix. Jane centers on an ambitious, virginal young woman (Gina Rodriguez) who gets accidentally artificially inseminated with what turns out to be her boss’ child while at the doctor for a regular checkup.
Based on a Venezuelan telenovela, The CW’s version puts its own spin on the original to make it more adaptable to an American audience.
Explains the rising star Rodriguez, “It’s going to be really exciting to go on this journey with this girl that has a very serious thing happen to her and see the way she chooses maybe not the popular choices in life, but the unpopular [on things like] her virginity. And I think that that’s a really awesome thing to put out into the world right now where we are bombarded by twerking. And don’t get me wrong, I can twerk.”
While some social media users wonder if the series can compete against the network’s sexy vampires and superheros, Jane‘s family bonds, solid comedy and good notice from critics for its pilot episode should keep the show on the air long enough to earn its place as a hit. And Jane is a strong and independent young woman who will be a relatable role model for teens.
“Every role that I’ve chosen has been one that I think is going to push forward the idea of my culture, of women, of beauty — my idea of liberating young girls of the feeling that they have to look like a specific beauty type,” says the proudly Hispanic Rodriguez, “If I can use my art and what I love to do everyday to change that perception, that’s awesome.”
Jane the Virgin premieres Monday, Oct. 13 at 9pm on The CW.
