Preview: Lifetime’s new makeover show Girlfriend Intervention

There’s no arguing the fact that there have been plenty of makeover shows on TV. Throughout the years it seems that once one ends, another one debuts, with the same basic concept and the same sort of host. A new brand of makeover show is long overdue and, thanks to Lifetime, that show has finally arrived in Girlfriend Intervention.

Girlfriend Intervention features a unique set of “makeover artists” — hairstylist Tracy Balan, home decorating expert Nikki Chu, fashionista Tiffiny Dixon and soul seeker Tanisha Thomas — whose mission is to turn a “BW” (Basic Woman) into the truly unique woman that she’s been hiding all along.

Their motto — that inside every white woman is a strong black woman trying to break out — may sound a bit ridiculous, once you tune in, you may realize that it might be true.

At the beginning of the process, the BW is very hesitant to open up and reveal her true self to the Girlfriend squad. It doesn’t help that on the first day she has to go on the “catwalk of shame” to show off her hideous outfits and get picked on for them. After that it’s time for “rack attack.” Tiffiny has the girl try on all sorts of outfits that push over her limits. This helps the squad get a true feeling of what the BW is like so they are best able to help make her transformation  easier and true to whom she is.

Over the next four days Nikki and Tiffiny head out to try to find what would appeal to the basic woman while making her more fashionable.

Nikki gets to pick a room to makeover in the woman’s house and she really knows how to express someone in the way she decorates a room. Tiffiny also understands how to pushing the BW’s fashion limits just enough to where she’s daring yet still herself. And Tracy gets to have a heart-to-heart with the girl while she tries to show how makeup only enhances the image that is revealed on the outside that expresses what one is feeling on the inside.

Just before the big reveal day, the whole gang heads out to do something special and fun with Tanisha. This soul sister helps the basic woman turn into a bold, confident woman, as she brings out the woman’s true colors by making her do something she wouldn’t dare do before.

On the fifth day it’s time for the “catwalk of fame” as the transformed woman gets to reveal her new look to her friends and family, and in Wednesday night’s premiere, it’s nothing but happiness and tears all around. The once-resistant participant, Jessie, can’t thank the Girlfriend Squad enough for helping her find out who she really is inside.

This show isn’t a comedy but comes with a lot of laughter in every episode. It also reveals a sentimental side, as viewers see a lost woman find herself once again through the help of these amazing women. Some viewers may even be able to connect with the girls on the show and make some changes of their own. Whether you want help in transforming yourself or just enjoy some feel-good TV, this show is a must watch!

Girlfriend Intervention premieres Wednesday August 27th at 10/9CT on Lifetime.
