It might just happen. Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) could potentially partner up in The Following season 2 finale — titled “Forgive” — to save their beloved Claire (Natalie Zea). The Following finale airs tonight on FOX at 9pm ET. While teasers tell us “no one is safe” this could mean the end for Joe Caroll, who series creator Kevin Williamson admitted to a crowd of TV critics earlier this year (when talking about a third season) that “we can’t keep Joe forever.” Let’s hope it’s at least one more season.
But who knows after last week’s bloodbath of major characters that saw long-time Joe devotee Emma Hill (Valorie Curry) being disappointing outwitted but ceremoniously killed (that girl didn’t die easily) by the now annoying Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea). She should have never listened to Joe! We also had the delightfully twisted psychopath Lily Gray (Connie Nielsen) — another favorite villain — who met her demise by the vengeance-hungry Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore). And speaking of Mike Weston, who so turned into another Ryan Hardy, his life is also in question tonight as cameras last cut out on him just when Joe’s gun was to his head and a shot was fired. Pray people, pray, Mike’s OK.
In addition to finding out about Mike’s fate, tonight is all Lily’s crazed sons Mark and Luke (both played fabulously by Sam Underwood) who hold the upper hand with Claire under their keeping. “Sam Underwood makes a big impression and he causes as much havoc this entire season,” Williamson told us at the start of the season, and he wasn’t exaggerating. Summing up the finale episode, Purefoy told The Hollywood Reporter that “this finale is all the bells and whistles, and it flip-flops every 30 seconds.” So prepare for a wild ride!
