“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” tying in stories with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”

NOTE: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUT THE FILM CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

After being one of the many who saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier this past weekend (the film set a record for best April opening, grossing an estimated $96.2 million), I doubt if I was the only one who wondered how, if at all, the plot of that film would affect the TV series Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. After all, by the end of the film, SHIELD has been brought crashing down by Cap, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Falcon and others in light of the discovery that, for the past 60-something years, the organization has been deeply infiltrated — even at some of its highest levels — by the sinister HYDRA group. Would Agents of SHIELD continue to operate in its own universe, a universe where SHIELD still operated? Would the series end with no more SHIELD?

Starting on tonight’s episode of Agents of SHIELD, called “Turn, Turn, Turn,” we start to find out some answers. The series will indeed start to tie its stories in with events featured in The Winter Soldier. In tonight’s episode, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team find themselves without anyone they can trust (echoing Fury’s warning to Cap in the film), and they discover that they are trapped with a traitor in their midst.

“Turn, Turn, Turn” will repeat on April 15, followed by the new episode “Providence,” continuing to tie plotlines in with the Captain America film. In “Providence,” Col. Glenn Talbot (guest star Adrian Pasdar) is on the trail of Coulson and his team, who seek refuge in the last place anyone would look, where they begin to uncover SHIELD’s most dangerous secrets. Patton Oswalt guest-stars in this episode as Agent Koenig, with Bill Paxton guest-starring in both episodes as Agent Garrett.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: “Turn, Turn, Turn” premieres April 8 at 8pm ET on ABC, and repeats April 15 at 8pm ET.

The “Providence” episode of Agents of SHIELD premieres April 15 at 9pm ET on ABC.
