Still enjoying re-airs of The Boondocks on Saturday nights, I had been wondering if the animated series was still in production, and according to a release today from Adult Swim, it is. The fourth and final season of The Boondocks will begin April 21 at 10:30pm ET/PT.
However, this season is going to be produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder — who created the series and the original comic strip on which it is based. According to the release, a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined. I hope McGruder’s lack of involvement does not diminish what has been a very insightful, provocative, unique and outright hilarious series during the course of its award-winning run.
(Aaron McGruder’s non-involvement with the new Boondocks season shouldn’t be construed as any conflict with the network, as just last week Adult Swim announced it is working with McGruder on a new, half-hour live-action scripted comedy called Black Jesus, which is created and co-executive produced by McGruder. Production has begun on Black Jesus, and it is expected to premiere later this year.)
According to Adult Swim, here’s what to expect in The Boondocks Season 4:
“The new season finds Huey, Riley and Granddad encountering a roster of characters, both new and familiar, in uproarious situations, including Granddad’s dating a long lost Kardashian sister; their friend Tom DuBois acting as R&B bad boy “Pretty Boy Flizzy’s” lawyer in exchange for relationship advice; Granddad’s love affair with Siri on his new iPhone; and the Freemans’ foray into the lethal black market of the hair-care industry à la “Breaking Bad.” Throughout the final season, an eclectic mix of hip-hop artists, actors, comedians and media personalities will voice guest characters on the series, including Jenifer Lewis (Think Like a Man), Dennis Haysbert (24), Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah, CeeLo, Lil Wayne, Donald Faison (Scrubs), Aisha Tyler (Balls of Fury), Kym Whitley (Reno 911!), Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris), Mo’Nique (The Parkers), Marion Ross (Happy Days), Tavis Smiley, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Bill Duke (X-Men: The Last Stand), and Cedric the Entertainer (Talk to Me). Reprising their guest roles from last season are Xzibit, Charlie Murphy, MTV’s Sway and Katt Williams, among others.”
The main voice cast is back, with John Witherspoon as Robert “Granddad” Freeman; Regina King as Huey and Riley; Gary Anthony Williams as Uncle Ruckus; Gabby Soleil as Jazmine DuBois; Jill Talley as Sarah DuBois; and Cedric Yarbrough as Tom DuBois. Yarbrough will also voice returning favorite Colonel H. Stinkmeaner.
