Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom This emotional look at the life of a legend as he rose to power in South Africa is everything you want a film like this to be. The performance by Idris Elba as Mandela at both a young and old age fits perfectly. Listen for the Golden Globe award-winning song by U2 as well. Also stars Naomie Harris, Terry Pheto (PG-13, 2:21) 3/18

Kill Your Darlings Daniel Radcliffe leaves Harry Potter far behind in his portrayal of Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in this story that follows Ginsberg during his days as a student at Columbia University. While there, Ginsberg begins a complicated relationship with a fellow student and meets fellow writers Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. Also stars Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall (R, 1:40) 3/18 Same day as DVD.

Saving Mr. Banks Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney in this dramatization of the relationship between the entertainment magnate and author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) who was more than a little reluctant to let Disney adapt her beloved novel Mary Poppins for the big screen. Also stars Colin Farrell (PG-13, 2:05) 3/18

Swerve  Driving cross-country, Colin happens across a car accident where he finds a suitcase full of money. He hands it into the local cop, but what seemed to be a good deed results in his being caught up in a series of dangerous events. Jason Clarke, Emma Booth (R, 1:26) 3/18 Same day as DVD.

12 Years a Slave Nine Academy Award nominations and three Oscars, including Best Picture, went to this searing, brutal drama based on the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup. Not an easy film to watch, and even harder to forget. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o (R, 2:14) 3/18
