River Monsters Season 6 finds Jeremy Wade back in the Amazon

Animal Planet announced that River Monsters — the network’s best-performing series for five years — will return with a new season. River Monsters Season 6 begins April 6 at 9pm ET/PT.

Whereas past seasons of River Monsters found host Jeremy Wade criss-crossing the globe in search of monstrous fish, in Season 6 the biologist/extreme angler will spend the entire season in South America — specifically, exploring the Amazon.

“I’ve been fishing the world for decades, but it’s the Amazon that keeps calling me back,” Wade said, in a release. “Now, I’m returning to solve the mission of a lifetime to spend an entire year going farther, deeper and more remote than I’ve even been before.”

The River Monsters Season 6 premiere, called “Amazon Apocalypse,” runs two hours and looks back at one of the Amazon’s largest maritime disasters, the sinking of the Sobra Santos. Witnesses and surviving passengers retell the story of the event, in which as many as 200 passengers lost their lives. Something in the water is being blamed for many of the deaths, and Jeremy Wade wants to find out what that might have been.

Following the River Monsters Season 6 premiere on April 6, Animal Planet will debut its first-ever live aftershow at 11pm, called River Monsters: Live with Jeremy Wade. The program will air on Animal Planet from 11pm-11:30pm, before moving to AnimalPlanet.com from 11:30pm-12am ET/PT. The live aftershow will feature Wade addressing questions from fans who submit via Twitter and Facebook, and will also include exclusive content.

River Monsters Season 6 episodes will also include the following (descriptions from Animal Planet):

“Jungle Terminator” — April 13 at 9pm ET/PT. Three mysterious deaths in three countries lead Wade on an adventure where he must team up with a remote and secretive tribe that has a unique and death-defying way of catching these culprits.

“River of Blood” — April 20 at 9pm ET/PT. A brutal underwater mutilation of a young man leads Wade to a face-to-face confrontation with one of South America’s greatest freshwater fighting fish that slashes and stalks its prey while living in one of Argentina’s most dangerous waterways.

“TBA Title” — April 27 at 9pm ET/PT. Locals call it the lau-lau, a creature so huge it’s said to swallow men whole, and Wade sets his sight on a specimen that is colossal in size and strength.

“Bone Crusher” — TBA date. When Brazilian locals uncover a corpse with highly unusual injuries and then an increase in missing persons cases are reported, Jeremy Wade must confront one of his greatest fears to solve the mystery.

“Body Snatcher” — TBA date. In the remote rivers of Guyana, Wade is on the hunt for a potential news species and newest candidate for largest freshwater fish in the world – a legendary predator freshwater mermaid or siren that could be real.
