5 Questions With Dot-Marie Jones of ‘Glee’

Dot-Marie Jones scored Emmy nominations in 2011, 2012 and 2013 for her role as tough-and-tender football coach Shannon Beiste on FOX’s Glee, which will finish out its fifth season in a new Tuesday-night time slot beginning Feb. 25.

With the show slated to focus on its New York-based characters heading into its sixth and final season, Jones says she trusts executive producer Ryan Murphy to bring Glee to a satisfying conclusion.

“I will be forever grateful for this beautiful part,” Jones smiles. “I was walking through an airport once and there was an older man pushing his wife in a wheelchair, and he reached over and smacked me on the arm. I said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry!’ — because I thought I was in his way — and he said, ‘I like your work, kid. My son and his wife, and me and my wife, and our grandkids, we watch “Glee” together every week.’ That’s the best compliment in the world!”

Dot Marie Jones Glee1. You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three titles. Which ones do you choose?
Us Weekly because I honestly do love that magazine. The L.A. Times. And then maybe something about track, because I was a track athlete.

2. If your TV carried just three networks or shows, what would they be?
FOX, FX and Showtime. American Horror Story and Nurse Jackie — and our show! —are amazing!

3. What has been your strangest fan encounter?
It was actually really cool. I was at a benefit for victims of domestic violence in Virginia and a woman came up to me and had my face on her T-shirt, but it was done in a bedazzle-type thing, with the shiny stuff. And I swear it looked just like me.

4. Tell us about a time when you were starstruck.
After I was nominated for my third Emmy this year — I say ‘Oh, my third Emmy!’ like I’m something fancy — I went to a Hollywood Reporter party and I walked around the corner and Jon Voight is standing there. I told him he was going to win for Ray Donovan. That’s one of my favorite shows.

5. What are three things you have to have in your fridge or pantry?
I have to have peanut butter. Always have to have mayonnaise. And always, always have to have juice boxes!

Glee airs Tuesday nights at 8/7CT on FOX.
