Switched at Birth recap: “Have You Really the Courage?”
In last week’s episode of ABC Family’s Switched at Birth we left off with a few problems in relationships with some of the characters. It’s right before Valentine’s Day, and all we want to see is the characters happy and in love with one another. But we don’t always get what we want, do we?
John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) have not made much progress at all. Last time, we saw John trying to get some sort of revenge on Kathryn when he tried to upset her by getting a motorcycle. Since then, both John and Kathryn have been too stubborn to actually talk to each other and solve their problems. To make matters even worse, don’t forget that Kathryn is still going on her trip to New York with Renzo (Alec Mapa) to pitch a book idea while John decides to skip his business trip and stay at home.
At the beginning of this episode, they definitely did not leave off on a good note. Kathryn’s original book pitch in New York does not go well, and to cheer herself up she decides to go out for a night on the town with Renzo and his friend the publisher, where she may have gotten herself into a bit of trouble. After a few drinks she starts telling some very personal stores that capture the publisher insisting that Kathryn share a few more of these stories for a new book – and trust me, these aren’t the sorts of stories you want to hear your mom writing about!
Meanwhile, John has been getting very personal himself with Nikki’s mom (Joey Lauren Adams), even inviting her over for dinner between just the two of them. The night ends a little too close and personal when they share a kiss followed by a hasty departure that happens to be caught by Regina (Constance Marie) as she is walking by.
This is obviously not the only pre-Valentine’s day heartbreak. Throughout this season of Switched at Birth, Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Tank (Max Adler) have been building a very strong friendship both inside and outside of art class. It’s not hard to tell that Tank has developed quite a crush on Bay and after helping her with her art and field hockey he decides to ask her out to grab some dinner.
Now, I’m not sure if Bay is just naïve here or stuck on the heartbreak of her past relationships, but apparently she couldn’t tell that Tank had a crush on her until Daphne (Katie Leclerc) tells her so after seeing Bay and Tank interacting together. After Bay finds this out, it ruins all of our hopes to see them ending up as the cutest couple for Valentine’s Day.
Towards the end she definitely puts Tank in the friend zone, which upsets him. After all of this though, he still comes to her rescue after she cuts her hand on glass. This leaves them at an okay place – I suppose – among the nuttiness of the other characters, including the rough home life of Sharee (Bianca Bethune) and, unfortunately, Toby’s (Lucas Grabeel) own marital problems.
Don’t let this episode get you too down right before Valentine’s Day, though. Maybe next week’s episode will be more promising. Watch a sneak peak of next week’s episode from ABC Family below:
