Ravenswood winter finale recap: “My Haunted Heart”

By Aleina McGettrick

In “My Haunted Heart,” the winter finale of ABC Family’s Ravenswood, there are a few loose ends put together, but there are still so many pieces to the puzzle that we are missing of this mysterious curse.

Since the beginning of the show many of us have been wondering what is going to happen to Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and Hanna’s (Ashley Benson) relationship because of Caleb’s connection to ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars. We haven’t heard much from Hanna since the beginning of the show until recently, when Caleb goes to visit her, and in this episode, when she makes a surprise visit to Caleb in Ravenswood. Before we saw Hanna in this episode, Caleb had pretty much broken things off with her and gave her a reason to believe that Caleb had developed feelings for Miranda (Nicole Gale Anderson).

When Hanna arrived to Ravenswood she was ready to let out all of her pent-up anger towards Miranda for “stealing” Caleb from her – little did she know that Miranda has been dead this whole time. When Caleb finally tells her his devastating news and the fact that he has been communicating with Miranda’s ghost, she doesn’t know how to respond, nor has she decided whether or not she can believe this madness that Caleb has gotten himself into. When Hanna has a conversation with Mrs. Grunwald (Meg Foster) she realizes that this could perhaps be the way that Caleb is coping with Miranda’s death – he wants to do all that he can to help Miranda for not being able to protect her. This is just something that Hanna has to accept, and even though she leaves Ravenswood on a better note than when she came, we are still left wondering how the distance between Caleb and Hanna will affect their relationship.

Of course, Caleb and Hanna aren’t the only ones that we have to consider. There’s also Miranda and the feelings that she herself has developed for Caleb throughout this whole first season of Ravenswood. In this episode, we found out that Mr. Collins (Steven Cabral) may not have known as much as he did of the involvement that Dillon (Luke Benward) has had with the curse. It’s no longer a secret that Dillon has been playing devil’s advocate with the murder of Olivia (Merritt Patterson) and Luke’s (Brett Dier) father and being involved in the attempted killing of the five teens for the curse. However, he does find a gruesome ending to his own life at the end of the episode.

Mr. Collins also can no longer keep the secret of how he has been involved in the curse, so he comes to the teens’ aid at the end of the episode by freeing whom we know to be the elder Caleb against the preacher’s persistent attempts to take the lives of the teens to pay the debt of the curse.

And this brings us back to Miranda. Elder Caleb is released, and is now a ghost just like Miranda. At the end of this episode of Ravenswood they are reunited, and we are brought back to the scene of elder Miranda and elder Caleb as teens before they died.

The premiere season of this show has been a great one, and it has only begun. Who knows what will happen next!
