“Enlisted” on FOX an irreverent and endearing comedy

It’s a family affair in Enlisted, FOX’s new military-based comedy that follows three bumbling brothers who are assigned to what they believe to be one of the lower echelons of their Florida army base — the Rear Detachment unit. Providing the brotherly banter and military mishaps with magnificent chemistry are Geoff Stults (Ben and Kate), Chris Lowell (The Help) and Parker Young (Suburgatory).

The creator and executive producer of the series is Cougar Town’s Kevin Biegel, who was looking to do something “intensely personal,” so he tapped into his own relationships.

“My relationship with my two younger brothers is the longest, best relationship I have in my life and they’ve been there with me through really difficult times and really great times, and we’re still kind of locked into that 16‑year‑old mentality sometimes,” Biegel says. “I thought it would be fun to write to something that was very much like that and then, also, write to something that kind of indulged in a world that I grew up in a little bit with a lot of family and friends in the military.”

Stults (pictured in the center above) plays the oldest brother, Pete, who punched his commanding officer and was moved to the Rear D as a result, much to the delight of his younger siblings. “The dynamic is about the relationship of three brothers who just so happen to be working together,” Stults says. “So not only do we have to navigate working together, but we have to navigate the fact that I’m their boss and what happens when, during the day I’m their boss, but at night I’m just their brother and treated accordingly, so we have a lot of fun with that.”

“Geoff is the older, protective big brother who maybe feels a sense of responsibility. Chris is the one that makes fun of Geoff and Parker. And Parker’s the one that shows up at Geoff’s house, naked at 3 in the morning,” Biegel says.

The result is an irreverent, yet endearing, comedic mix that feels a bit Hogan’s Heroes meets Stripes. It’s the perfect addition to a rather dull Friday night lineup.

Enlisted premieres Jan. 10 at 9:30pm ET/PT on FOX, and airs Fridays.
