2013 American Music Awards: Date, time, TV channel, preview and more!

While the Grammys traditionally have been regarded as music’s biggest night, the American Music Awards has also established itself as an awards show to watch. Happening at the end of the year, as opposed to the no man’s land of February, it’s the perfect time to reflect back on the year that was. With a stellar lineup, the 2013 American Music Awards should fit the bill.

2013 American Music Awards Pitbull ABCAiring at 8pm ET tonight on ABC, the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles will be rocking as Katy Perry opens the ceremony with her new single “Unconditionally,” the follow-up to “Roar” off her behemoth album Prism. Closing the night — and making sure you all stay till the end, right? — will be Miley Cyrus, whose tongue is probably already out of her mouth rehearsing whatever attention-grabbing stunt he has planned. In between those two will be performances by Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan. Hosting duties fall to Pitbull.

Oh yes, and there will be some actual awards handed out. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis lead all nominees with six, followed closely by Swift and Timberlake who each have five. All three will be in the Artist of the Year category, where they’ll compete with Bruno Mars and Rihanna.

Rihanna will receive the first-ever Icon Award at the ripe old age of 25. There’s no disputing that Rihanna is a popular and talented artist, but does the word “icon” really mean anything anymore, other than popular? Perhaps the producers need to listen to Inigo Montoya’s famous quote “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

For those so inclined, red-carpet coverage of the 2013 American Music Awards will start at 7pm ET on E! with hosts Giuliana Rancic and Terrence Jenkins.
