On its first airing, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. opened strong, becoming No. 1 in the 8pm hour with Adults 18-49 (4.6/14), and actually beating NBC’s Tuesday premiere of The Voice by 15% (4.0/12) and CBS’ season premiere of NCIS by 35% (3.4/10). According to an ABC release, the series premiere qualified to be TV’s highest-rated drama debut in nearly four years, since Nov. 3, 2009. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was also Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49 (tie) and across all key Men demos (M18-34/M18-49/M25-54). The debut also gained young adults from its first half-hour to its second half-hour. In its release, ABC also notes that it expects that, on top its Live + Same Day numbers, Agents of SHIELD should get a big lift from TV playback. ABC has these expectations based on the show’s young-skewing audience and the fact that well ahead of its debut, it surpassed 1 million Facebook fans.

In the premiere episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it is just after the battle of New York, and now that the existence of superheroes and aliens has become public knowledge, the world is trying to come to grips with this new reality. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) is back in action and has his eye on a mysterious group called The Rising Tide. In order to track this unseen, unknown enemy, he has assembled a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division). The group’s first assignment together as a team finds them trying to track down an ordinary man who has gained extraordinary powers, powers that could have devastating consequences.

The series also stars Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge. Joss Whedon is a co-creator and co-executive producer.

The series premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD re-airs Sept. 26 at 8pm ET on ABC.
