The Sprint Cup Series “playoffs” begin Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2pm ET on ESPN at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., in the GEICO 400, the first race of the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The top 12 drivers in the Sprint Cup standings have a shot at racing for the championship over the season’s final stretch. The drivers competing for the championship are Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Joey Logano, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman. A controversial finish in Saturday’s race at Richmond resulted in Michael Waltrip Racing being penalized and fined for drivers Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers “diving” to get Martin Truex Jr. into the Chase field and keep Ryan Newman out. The penalty, however, reverses that outcome and gives Newman the 12th and final Chase spot and knocks Truex out. (The above photo was taken at Richmond before the penalties were assessed.)

“Based upon our review of Saturday night’s race at Richmond, it is our determination that the MWR organization attempted to manipulate the outcome of the race,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “As the sport’s sanctioning body, it is our responsibility to ensure there is a fair and level playing field for all of our competitors and this action today reflects our commitment to that.”

  1. I will not watch the race this year… I was a NASCAR
fan but when tricks are played to cheat… I am out
no more nascar…. a lot of fans feel cheated…

    • I will not watch 2013 NASCAR CHASE RACE.
Martin Truex, Jr. should not have been taken out of the CHASE race. HE DID NOTHING WRONG!!!!!!
Nascar had the option of penalizing Clint Boyer, ONLY, if they felt he changed the outcome of the line-up by “spinning out”. Which in my opinion was not premeditated. Nascar should have held off making a final decision of the drivers 10-12th position if they needed to review the finish of the race. Nascar could have changed the line-up by putting Clint Boyer in 12th position. Really, Nascar, you put Jeff Gordon in the Chase. You just showed blatant disregard for what is the right decision. Martin Truex, Jr. has fans, too! NASCAR, I don’t recall you penalizing JJ and Chad when he said to Jimmy, make sure you hit the back of the car after having won race. We the fans heard that. NASCAR, YOU MADE THE WRONG DECISION IN TAKING MARTIN TRUEX OUT, MAKE IT RIGHT.
