Official Sharknado 2 title announced

After soliciting Twitter submissions for the subtitle to its announced sequel to the surprise pop-culture hit Sharknado, Syfy said yesterday that the title will be: Sharknado 2: The Second One (they say they waded through over 5,000 Twitter submissions before deciding on this one).

Thomas Vitale, executive vice president, programming and original movies at Syfy, said, “Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2. This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”

Sharknado 2: The Second One will also be produced by The Asylum, and is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in July 2014. This time, the story will be set in New York City.

The original Sharknado starred Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and John Heard. While not a huge ratings success when it first aired July 11, the movie was a Twitter sensation, and each of its two subsequent re-airings on Syfy have grown in viewership, with the most recent re-air on July 27 drawing just over 2 million total viewers. Syfy plans to re-air Sharknado again on Aug. 22 at 7pm ET/PT, ahead of the premiere of its latest shark film, Ghost Shark. Sharknado will be released on DVD Sept. 3.

What do you think of the title, Sharknado 2: The Second One? Will you be watching the sequel?
