2013 MTV VMA nominations announced

Today, MTV revealed the nominations for the 30th annual MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which will air live from Barclays Center Aug. 25 at 9pm ET/PT. The ceremony will be taking place in Brooklyn for the first time ever, with every artist who wins a 2013 MTV VMA taking home a limited-edition re-imagining of the iconic MTV Moonman (pictured) designed by Brooklyn-based artist KAWS exclusively for the show.

Among those vying for that statuette, Justin Timberlake, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, lead the 2013 MTV VMA nominees with six overall nominations each. Timberlake’s nominations include Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Best Editing for “Mirrors,” while his “Suit & Tie,” featuring Jay-Z, received nods for Best Collaboration and Best Direction. Justin Timberlake has previously won seven Video Music Awards.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis received their first-ever VMA nominations, including Video of the Year for “Thrift Shop”; Best Hip-Hop Video; Best Cinematography; Best Direction and Best Editing for “Can’t Hold Us featuring Ray Dalton,” while “Same Love” received a nod for Best Video with a Social Message.

Other 2013 MTV VMA nominees include P!nk, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus and Thirty Seconds to Mars, with three nominations each, along with previously nominated artists such as Taylor Swift, Drake, fun., Calvin Harris and the Yeah Yeah Yeah. First-time VMA nominees include Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd and Capital Cities.

Starting today, fans can vote in general 2013 MTV VMA categories, including Video of the Year, Artist to Watch and more, at vma.mtv.com, or by texting VOTE to 22444 (with standard message and data rates applying, of course). Additionally, Artist to Watch is available for voting via MTV’s official Facebook page. Voting for all 2013 MTV MVA categories, except Artist to Watch, ends Aug. 12 at 6pm ET. Voting for Artist to Watch continues through the show and will be announced live Aug. 25.

Nominees for an additional, new socially voted category — Best Song of the Summer — will be announced on Aug. 12.
