Approaching the historic General Hospital 50th anniversary on April 1, and to help mark the daytime drama’s Golden Anniversary, ABC has partnered with amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, for a storyline integration as the show brings back the popular GH Nurses Ball.

The Nurses Ball is a fictional charity event complete with musical performances from the characters of General Hospital‘s setting of Port Charles, and is dedicated to HIV/AIDS awareness. The inaugural GH Nurses Ball aired in 1994 and became an annual event and fan favorite until 2001. It is returning in 2013 for the show’s 50th anniversary.

General Hospital‘s partnership with amfAR marks the first time that the GH Nurses Ball will be linked to a non-fictional charity, and it helps to continue amfAR’s mission of raising HIV/AIDS awareness.

General Hospital is proud to be working with amfAR as we celebrate our 50th anniversary,” said executive producer Frank Valentini. “We have pulled out all the stops to make the return of the Nurses Ball an event worth waiting for, and by linking the ball to amfAR we partner in their efforts to raise awareness beyond the town of Port Charles.”

General Hospital airs weekdays at 2pm ET/1pm PT/CT on ABC. The show celebrates its 50th anniversary April 1.
