TV Land Awards 2013 not happening, network says

For the past 10 years, springtime has meant another addition of the TV Land Awards, a nostalgia-packed gala that celebrates classic television and usually is good for at least one blockbuster cast reunion. Yet the TV Land Awards 2013 are not to be.

A spokesman for TV Land told me, “We love the TV Land Awards and think there is great value in the franchise, but we will not be producing the show this spring.”

Short and sweet, but a bitter pill for fans of a show that has brought such memorable moments as 2011’s Welcome Back, Kotter reunion, which probably stands as John Travolta’s most recent dignified public appearance. Then there was last year’s One Day at a Time get-together, which takes on extra poignancy in light of star Bonnie Franklin’s death earlier this month. The show also had brought back casts from Family Ties, The Cosby Show, The Caroll Burnett Show, The Facts of Life, The Brady Bunch, In Living Color and several others.

No word yet on whether the TV Land Awards are gone for good, but here’s hoping they get another shot. We’re always talking about how there are too many awards shows, and that we could stand to lose a few (Would country-music fans really feel cheated with one less awards show?), but this is one we actually kinda liked. It allowed us to indulge in that need for nostalgia but not feel all cheap about it. No mean feat.

  1. TV Land was such a great network at one time. All the old classics from yesteryear, uncut and just as funny to me now as it was then. The thing that irritates me about TV Land is their need or desire to create their own sitcoms: The Exes, Retired at 35 and Hot in Cleveland…I don’t understand it. There is a treasure trove of great shows out there and they feel the need to come up with their own shows? Doesn’t make sense at all. Thank goodness for COZI, Antenna TV and METV they keep the ball rolling.

  2. TV LAND ALL BUT SUCKS ANY MORE~ GET US LURED IN WITH PROGRAMMING YEARS AGO~WHEN THEY STARTED~ THEN DO A BAIT AND SWITCH ~ THAT’S WHY BESIDES BETTY WHITE ~ THIS HOUSE HOLD NEVER WATCHES TV LAND ANY MORE~ ROTTEN BASTARDS THAT RUN TV LAND DO SUCK~ AND NOTHING IS EVER ON TIME ANY WAYS~ AND THE END CREDITS WHICH THEY USED TO SHOW FULLY THEY WAY THEY AIRED NOW IS DOWN BELOW THE SCREEN~ LIKE I SAID SUCK ~ TV LAND SUCKS~

  3. Instead of mini replacement show, bring the tv land awards back. MANY,many PEOPLE enjoyed it!

  4. This is an award show that MANYMANY PEOPLE ENJOYED! Instead of stupid mini replacements BRING THIA BACK!

  5. I’m so disappointed I don’t look forward to much but the TV Land awards was one of my few pleasures. I hope that this was just a bad decision and it will resume next year. I’m in my early 40’s. I had a rough childhood. TV got me through it…through life. Now as an adult seeing the reunions was, in a way, seeing old friends and family. Now as an adult and going through my share of tough times …watching the award show would make me forget for a few minutes. Giving actors that I held dear as a child…giving them an award…why is that asking too much?

  6. This isn’t surprising. TV Land hasn’t been a true nostalgic network in years. They want to play in the big leagues and program what they consider more hip, contemporary programs. I left this network a long time ago. The producers should take the awards to another network that specializes in the kind of classic programs that TV Land used to. TV Land awards can easily become the MeTV awards.

  7. are they crazy?i’ve watched every one and look forward to it. they are always a great tribute to the shows that got us through life

  8. THERE ARE ONLY 5 AWARD SHOWS THAT REALLY MEAN ANYTHING.THE OSCARS EMMYS TONYS GRAMMYS AND THE TV LAND AWARDS.PLEASE RECONSIDER.

  9. The TV Land awards are really more fun and interesting than the other awards shows. My family and I look forward to it every year. I hope they have the show this year. How about a reunion of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, It’s a Different World, and many more.

  10. WHAT !!!! I have always watched the TV Land awards ! This is what keeps us young. Take off some of the other non-essential awards shows. This is actually one that people watch !!!!

  11. I am sad to hear Tv Land awards are not on anymore. I always enjoyed watching it. I watched the award show every year since it has been on Tv Land. So why are they changing?

  12. I’ve always thought of the TV Land Awards show as more of a reunion show than an awards show. Very disappointed. I agree that TV Land is starting to show other older shows that are on other channels…please stick to the OLD(er) shows, it was much better…don’t need to see Friends, Golden Girls..they’re on several other channels.

  13. I agree there are too many award shows but not like this one. I enjoyed the reunions. Please reconsider.

  14. I love the TV Land Awards and I look forward to it every year. There is so much terrible stuff happening in the world right now. We need something to connect us to our past when things were a little simpler.

  15. I would love to have the TV Land Award show every year. It is important to show the classis showsof the pass years because theses show are the ones who made the current shows now.
