“Spartacus: War of the Damned”: Go behind the scenes

OK, it’s a ways away, but we know there are lots of you Spartacus fans out there, and that many of you will be looking for any insight into the new season that you can find. Starz isn’t giving away much in the way of secrets at this point — the season doesn’t actually begin until January — but they have released a “behind the scenes” video clip for Spartacus: War of the Damned, which will mark the final season of the Spartacus series.

Currently filming in New Zealand, the new season begins following the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber. Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) and his men have scored major victories against the Romans in the wake of the Battle of Vesuvius, making a legend of Spartacus in the process and swelling the ranks of his followers to more than 30,000. In Rome, the threat that Spartacus presents to Roman dominance in the empire is becoming palpable — he’s a stone in their sandals that they would rather remove.

It’s obviously going to be a bit of a bittersweet experience for Spartacus fans, given that the January premiere will begin the countdown to the end of the entire series. But the good news is that everybody who’s part of the production seems to be intent on going out in a blaze of epic-styled glory, and they’re withholding nothing. The action for this season of Spartacus is liable to be more intense than in seasons past — if that’s possible — and we’ll be surprised if, at the end of it all, anyone is left standing. For now, know that in addition to McIntyre returning as Spartacus, Manu Bennett, Dustin Clare, Dan Feurriegel, Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Ellen Hollman all return in their respective roles, and are joined by Todd Lasance, who joins the cast of Spartacus: War of the Damned as Gaius Julius Caesar; Simon Merrells, who plays Marcus Crassus; and Anna Hutchison as Laeta.

So take it in, savor it, and steel yourself for the violence yet to come. Spartacus may be on the way out, but it’s definitely not going gentle into its goodnight.
