British music legends join for Olympics closing ceremony

For those of us suffering from Olympic burnout, take solace. The end is near.

The 2012 London Summer Olympic Games come to a conclusion on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 7pm ET on NBC with the closing ceremony, titled “A Symphony of British Music.” Aside from the music and visual spectacle, the closing ceremony also includes the march of the athletes, the transfer of the Olympic flag to the mayor of Rio de Janeiro (host of the 2016 Summer Games) and the extinguishing of the Olympic flame. Bob Costas will host the ceremony, alongside Al Michaels and Ryan Seacrest. The ceremony follows a special presentation called London Gold, a look at the top moments and athletes of the 2012 Olympics.

Of course, NBC is tape-delaying coverage of the Olympics closing ceremony and saving it for prime time.

UPDATE 8/11/12: NBC has confirmed that it will also be streaming the closing ceremony live at NBCOlympics.com and on the NBC Olympics Live Extra App on mobile devices and tablets beginning at 4pm ET to cable, satellite and telco customers who verify their subscriptions.

There are a number of British music artists confirmed and rumored to be performing during the ceremony. In total there are expected to be around 20 well-known performers and 30 different songs.

Confirmed: Muse, George Michael, The Spice Girls (unless there’s some kind of elaborate hoax going on)

Rumored: Ray Davies, Adele, Liam Gallagher’s band Beady Eye, Ed Sheeran with members of Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Take That, The Who, Queen, Paul Weller, One Direction, Madness, the Pet Shop Boys, Elton John, the Rolling Stones and Kate Bush

Should definitely be included IMHO: Rick Astley, Samantha Fox, Bananarama, Billy Idol, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Thomas Dolby, Jethro Tull performing “Aqualung” for 20 minutes, 1975 Peter Frampton transported through time to 2012, Phil Collins drumming No Jacket Required in its entirety, Spinal Tap and hologram Sid Vicious
