How to watch the Olympics online

NBCUniversal is offering more than 3,500 hours of live streaming video on NBCOlympics.com through NBC Olympics Live Extra, featuring every sport, plus event replays, highlights, news, athlete profiles and more.

Authenticated broadband viewers can get live simulcast streams of events on CNBC, MSNBC, NBC Sports Network and Bravo. NBC’s prime-time Olympics coverage — including the opening and closing ceremonies — will not be streamed.

One of the coolest new features of online Olympic video coverage is the Gold Zone, which starts on Saturday. Similar to NFL Network’s RedZone channel, the Gold Zone presents the best of what’s happening right now, and whips around the venues to give you medal competitions or key moments in a game or event. A Twitter feed (@NBC_GoldZone) on the side of the screen indicates what’s currently being viewed and provides other commentary.

There are plenty of free features on NBCOlympics.com, but you’ll need to be a pay-TV subscriber (cable, satellite, telco, etc.) to have access to the full streaming video features. I signed up yesterday and it was incredibly easy, and I was impressed with all the live video options available for some of the soccer events before the opening ceremony.

First, you’ll need an online username and password from your pay-TV provider. If you don’t have one or have forgotten your login info, you may need to visit your provider’s website and provide account numbers, an e-mail address or other information.

If you’ve already got a login, head over to NBCOlympics.com. You’ll see this on the right:

The link will take you to the NBC Olympics Live Extra login page, where you’ll see this banner:

Look for your pay-TV provider’s logo in the pop-up menu. Click on your provider, enter your login info, and you’re set. The site will remember your login so you only need to do the process once. And if you have any trouble, there’s an FAQ/help page.

There are also Live Extra mobile applications for viewing on phones and tablets.
