Adam Sandler shatters record for awfulness as 2011 Razzie Award nominations announced

It’s been a tradition since 1980 for The Golden Raspberry Awards (a.k.a. “The Razzies“) to serve as a tongue-in-cheek alternative to Oscar’s big night. Whereas the Academy Awards gala offers glitz, glamour and somewhat self-serving pats on the back from Hollywood peer to Hollywood peer, the Razzies have taken a different tact — recognizing what many of us filmgoers know, that much of what the Tinseltown dream factory churns out can be pretty dreadful.

It had been typical for the Razzies to piggyback on the Oscars, announcing its “winners” the night before the Academy’s big event. But this year, the Razzies shook things up. They announced their nominees last night, Oscar eve, and will be announcing the winners, appropriately, on April 1.

Already the change was historic, as Adam Sandler set a Razzie record for the most single-year nominations, earning 11 and shattering the previous record of five garnered by Eddie Murphy at the 2007 nominations. Sandler’s nominations ran the gamut from acting to writing, and spanned across his involvement in three films: Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star; Jack & Jill; and Just Go With It. Jack & Jill itself received 12 nominations overall, two of which include Sandler as Worst Actor and Worst Actress for his dual role as a man and his twin sister.

Also of Razzie historical note, for the first time, all five nominated Worst Pictures will also be vying for Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Ensemble.
