VOD Spotlight: “Something Borrowed”

In this romantic comedy, single gal Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) always seems to lose out to her more vivacious and flirtatious friend, Darcy (Kate Hudson). But trouble arises when Darcy becomes engaged to Dex, for whom Rachel has had a secret crush since they were both in law school. Since she’s also just hit age 30, in a fit of honesty she confesses her love to Dex and discovers that the crush is mutual. That’s when things get complicated.

“Rachel has mapped out her entire life,” says Goodwin. “Suddenly she finds herself sort of nowhere. She’s lonely. So she does something off her moral compass … and after that, it’s a bit of a roller coaster.”

And for women, these take-the-plunge-moments are a mark of true courage. Some do it, some only wish, but it is that internal courage that makes films such as this one so endearing to female audiences.

That “three-oh” date was the reason Something Borrowed was created in the first place. Novelist Emily Giffin reached a turning point in her life just before that monumental birthday, elected to leave her job as an attorney and begin writing. The result was her first published novel Something Borrowed, which became a New York Times bestseller. “It was the first time in my life I had taken a significant risk and not the safe path,” says Giffin. “There are strong emotional parallels; the realization that you only have one shot in life.”

Fans of the novel will be pleased to know that Giffin was involved in the film’s creative process from the beginning, working with producers Hillary Swank (Oscar winner for Million Dollar Baby) and Molly Mickler Smith (The Blind Side) on casting, as well as on creation of the script. “It’s been a joy to watch this come to life,” Giffin says, adding that she believes her readers will be pleased with the result.

“Something Borrowed” is now showing on Video On Demand. Check your cable system for availability.
