What to Watch: Halloween season 2010

Whether you like your Halloween scares terrifying, gory, classic, humorous, family-friendly — or all of the above — there are plenty of options to tune in to this season, and following are some highlights listed in airdate order. Programs are subject to change; check back throughout the month for updates and additions. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation— CBS, Oct. 7 at 9pm ET/PT. In the new “Blood Moon” episode, a vampire and werewolf convention is at the heart of a murder investigation in Las Vegas. Even scarier: Andy Dick guest-stars as an armory dealer.

Special Agent Oso — Disney Channel, Oct. 8 at 10am ET/PT. “A View to a Mask”: Oso helps Kevin make a mask for his Halloween costume; “Pumpkin Eyes”: Oso helps Navaeh learn how to make a jack o’lantern in time for a Halloween contest.

The Suite Life on Deck — Disney Channel, Oct. 8 at 8pm ET/PT. “The Ghost and Mr. Martin”: The S.S. Tipton docks at the site of an old shipwreck in New Orleans. Though it has been 150 years since the tragedy, Zack believes that the ghost of the man deemed responsible has returned and is seeking help in proving his innocence.

Hammer horror films showcase — TCM, Oct. 8 at 8pm ET. It’s Hammer time once again as TCM continues its Friday airings of classic fright films from England’s legendary Hammer studio. Tonight’s lineup includes the films Plague of the Zombies (1966); The Devil’s Bride (1968); The Reptile (1966); and The Gorgon (1964).

Tricking and Treating With Martha Stewart — Hallmark Channel, Oct. 10 at 9pm ET/PT. Martha offers tips on doing Halloween night right, from tips on decorating your home in a spooky way to decorating pillow cases as trick-or-treat bags to crafting your own costume to party ideas and more. Brendan Fraser is among the guest stars, and has to resort to dressing as a mummy.

Sounds of the Seasons: Halloween — Music Choice, Oct. 15-Nov.1. The music channel sets a spooky mood with scary songs and instrumental pieces.

Hammer horror films showcase — TCM, Oct. 15 at 8pm ET. TCM’s all wrapped up in mummies in tonight’s marathon of Hammer studio horror flicks, with the airing of The Mummy (1959); Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (1964); The Mummy’s Shroud (1967); and Blood From the Mummy’s Tomb (1972).

Fearfest — AMC, Oct. 18 at 8pm through Nov. 1. Ready for two weeks of horror? AMC’s annual horror movie marathon kicks off with the original 1980 Friday the 13th and never lets up on the frights. Films making their network premieres during the marathon include 28 Days Later (Oct. 24, 25 & 30); the 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead (Oct. 31); Dead Silence (Oct. 22 & 26); Evil Dead II (Oct. 30 & 31); From Dusk Till Dawn (Oct. 30 & 31); 2005’s House of Wax (Oct. 22, 25 & 26); and Jeepers Creepers 2 (Oct. 24 & 25). AMC is also premiering its awesome new series The Walking Dead during Fearfest (see further in this article, under Oct. 31). Other movie highlights during Fearfest include Aliens; 1931’s Dracula; 1978’s Halloween; 1968’s Night of the Living Dead; The Shining; 1941’s The Wolf Man and many more.

13 Nights of Halloween — ABC Family, Oct. 19-31. For the 12th year, ABC Family offers programming filled with ghouls, ghosts and some laughs. Things start on Oct. 19 at 8pm ET/PT with a special Halloween episode of Melissa & Joey called “A Fright in the Attic.” Other highlights include the basic cable premiere of The Spiderwick Chronicles on Oct. 24; the movie Van Helsing on Oct. 21; Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride on Oct. 24; The Haunted Mansion on Oct. 27; the network premiere of The Black Cauldron on Oct. 30; Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory on Oct. 31 at plenty more.

Scream 2010 — Spike, Oct. 19 at 9pm ET/PT. The fifth annual event honoring everything sci-fi, horror, fantasy and comic-book, is getting some high-powered stars this year. Set to attend are the likes of Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Ball, Wes Craven and more. World-premiere footage of the upcoming Scream 4, Paranormal Activity 2 and The Rite will be shown, and Michael J. Fox will be on hand as Back to the Future receives a 25th anniversary tribute.

Parenthood: “Orange Alert” — NBC, Oct. 19 at 10pm ET. Zeek once again tries to go overboard with the Halloween celebration and is upset when Haddie, Amber and Drew refuse to join in the fun.  Meanwhile, Adam and Kristina are nervous about Max’s new plans for the holiday.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street”: The Inside Story — Bio Channel, Oct. 20 at 9pm ET. This is the first part of a two-night, four-hour look at the definitive account of the creation of Wes Craven’s classic 1984 horror film. Included are interviews with Craven and stars Robert Englund, John Saxon and more, along with deleted footage and behind-the-scenes clips. Part 2 airs Oct. 21 at 9pm ET.

Big Time Rush: “Big Time Halloween” — Nickelodeon, Oct. 22 at 8pm ET/PT. It’s Halloween in Palm Woodsylvania and the monstrous personas of Big Time Rush come to light: James is a Vampire, Logan is a Zombie who keeps losing his limbs, Carlos is Franken-Carlos and Kendall is a Werewolf who is trying to hide his real identity from Jo.

Hammer horror films showcase — TCM, Oct. 22 at 8pm ET. Tonight’s Hammer horror lineup includes X the Unknown (1956); Five Million Years to Earth (1968); These Are the Damned (1963); and The Stranglers of Bombay (1960).

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf — Nickelodeon, Oct. 23 at 8pm ET/PT. Victoria Justice (Victorious) makes her TV movie debut playing a shy and unpopular teen who is transformed into a werewolf during a visit to Romania, where her family has inherited an ancient castle. Brooke Shields also stars as a stern Romanian housekeeper who knows the castle’s secrets.

Growing the Big One — Hallmark Channel, Oct. 23 at 9pm ET/PT. Shannen Doherty stars in this original movie as Emma Silver, a Seattle radio DJ who is called back to her grandfather’s small farming community following his death. When the bank threatens to foreclose on his farm, she tries to raise the money needed to save it by entering the community’s annual pumpkin-growing contest.

iCarly: “iScream on Halloween” — Nickelodeon, Oct. 25 at 7pm ET/PT. Carly, Sam and Freddie do the show from an apartment that is rumored to be haunted. When creepy things start happening, the friends worry that the ghost rumors just might be true. Meanwhile, when Spencer forgets to buy candy, he’s got a bunch of angry trick-or-treaters on his hands.

SpongeBob SquarePants: “Scaredy Pants”/”The Curse of Bikini Bottom” — Nickeoloden, Oct. 25 at 7:30pm ET/PT. It’s Halloween again, and like every year, SpongeBob is the easiest scare in Bikini Bottom. This year, though, he is determined to turn the tables and scare everyone at Mr. Krab’s Halloween party. Then, SpongeBob and Patrick disturb the Flying Dutchman’s slumber, and he turns them into ghosts.

Chuck — NBC, Oct. 25 at 8pm ET. When Chuck, Sarah, Casey and Morgan are tasked to stop Dr. Stanley Wheelright (guest star Robert Englund, A Nightmare on Elm Street) from releasing a nightmare-inducing toxin, they’re also led to question the allegiances of Chuck’s mom (guest star Linda Hamilton). Meanwhile, Jeff and Lester use their unique sensibilities to celebrate Halloween at the Buy More, and Ellie and Awesome get a visit from Dr. Honey Woodcomb (guest star Morgan Fairchild).

“Halloween”: The Inside Story — Bio Channel, Oct. 25 at 9pm ET. An inside look at the making of John Carpenter’s 1978 low-budget horror masterpiece. Carpenter and star Jamie Lee Curtis are among those on hand offering commentary.

Degrassi: “Monster Moon” — Teen Nick, Oct. 25-28 at 9pm ET/PT. This four-part Degrassi miniseries airs Monday-Thursday this week. As the Monster Moon rises above the school’s Halloween dance, the students are in for some surprising twists and turns.

Dead Set — IFC, Oct. 25-29 at midnight ET/PT. The hit British zombie series that Stephen King called “one of the ten best things I saw on TV this year” makes its U.S. television premiere. The gory horror comedy is set in the British Big Brother house. Cocooned in the safety of that  house, fame-seeking contestants of this hit reality TV game show are safe and blissfully unaware that a zombie apocalypse has overtaken the outside world — until “eviction night,” when all hell breaks loose. The five-part series airs Oct. 25-29, with a special Halloween marathon Oct. 31 from 8pm to 11pm ET/PT.

Glee: “The Rocky Horror Glee Show” — FOX, Oct. 26 at 8pm ET/PT. Will decides to have the glee club perform “The Rocky Horror Show” for the annual school musical after learning of Emma’s newfound love for the cult classic. Despite Sue’s usual scheming, the members of New Directions inject their distinctive style to such timeless tracks as “The Time Warp” and “Damn It, Janet.”

Raising Hope: “Happy Halloween/Family Secrets” (one-hour episode) — FOX, Oct. 26 at 9pm ET/PT. When Sabrina’s boyfriend can’t make it to the deli guy’s Halloween party, Jimmy offers to put on his costume and go in his place. Virginia takes Maw Maw, who is dressed as a cat, trick-or-treating, while Burt plots ways to play tricks on Jimmy. Meanwhile, when a box containing videos of Hope’s mother arrives from prison, Jimmy must decide whether or not to let Hope see them. Virginia explains that children need to be protected from the truth, leading Jimmy to question what exactly his parents have been keeping from him.

“Ghostly Encounters” Marathon — Bio Channel, Oct. 27 from 8am-8pm ET.

The Middle: “Halloween” — ABC, Oct. 27 at 8pm ET. Frankie is excited about being invited to an adult neighborhood Halloween party. But will she be able to get Mike to dress up in a costume? Meanwhile, Sue’s spirits are lifted when she discovers Reverend TimTom is back in town and hosting a Halloween church event. Axl and his friends head to an exclusive haunted house party, while Brick chooses a unique Halloween costume that is not easily defined.

Better With You: “Better With Halloween” — ABC, Oct. 27 at 8:30pm ET. It’s Halloween, which is also the date of Maddie’s birthday, who feels like she can never have a real birthday because the holiday always steals her spotlight. Mia and Casey offer to give her a Halloween-free party at their new home, the renovated firehouse.

Modern Family: “Halloween” — ABC, Oct. 27 at 9pm ET. Claire loves Halloween and is gearing up to spookify the Dunphy house for the trick or treaters. She gives each family member a role to play, but none of it goes quite right… Cameron can’t shake a traumatic childhood experience and hates the holiday, Mitchell has had a terrible day at work, and Gloria is acting weird after being teased by Jay and Manny about her accent.

The Real Story of Halloween — History, Oct. 27 at 9pm ET. A look at how our Halloween traditions of today can trace their roots back thousands of years.

The Good Witch — Hallmark Channel, Oct. 27 at 9pm ET/PT. Catherine Bell stars in this hit original movie in which she plays Cassandra Nightingale, a witch who spreads a love potion around the new town she has moved into.

Cougar Town: “You Don’t Know How It Feels” — ABC, Oct. 27 at 9:30pm ET. Jules’ dad (Ken Jenkins of Scrubs) comes to visit on a special Halloween episode. Jules is determined to connect with him, so much so that she gives in to dressing up for Halloween, his favorite holiday. Meanwhile, Grayson hits it off with Jules’ dad, Bobby wants back in as baby Stan’s guardian, should anything happen to Ellie and Andy, and Laurie reminds Travis how much fun Halloween is.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown — ABC, Oct. 28 at 8pm ET. The 1966 Peanuts classic continues to be an annual Halloween tradition. The special is included with a bonus Peanuts cartoon, You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown. Great Pumpkin also airs Oct. 29 at 8pm ET.

Scared Shrekless — NBC, Oct. 28 at 8pm ET. This new special from DreamWorks brings together the characters from the blockbuster Shrek films. Halloween is Shrek’s favorite holiday, and this year he’s planning a night of frights – all done ogre-style. Instead of the usual tricks or treats, Shrek challenges Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots and the other fairy tale characters to spend the night in Lord Farquaad’s haunted castle telling scary stories. The last one to be scared “Shrekless” will win.

Dead of Night — TCM, Oct. 28 at 8pm ET. Outstanding and influential 1945 horror anthology film, about guests at a country estate sharing stories of the supernatural.

Community — NBC, Oct. 28 at 8:30pm ET. Pierce and a few other Greendale students ingest a bio-hazard substance at the school Halloween party, causing them to exhibit flu-like symptoms and they soon begin turning into zombies. It is up to the rest of the gang to save themselves and the school when Dean Pelton locks them in with the zombie-infected student body.

The Good Witch’s Garden — Hallmark Channel, Oct. 28 at 9pm ET/PT. Catherine Bell is back in this equally popular follow-up to The Good Witch. Cassie is now settled in with her boyfriend, but a stranger with legal papers shows up and tries to take her home away. Bell will be back next month in the premiere of a third film in this series, The Good Witch’s Gift, on Nov. 13.

The Office — NBC, Oct. 28 at 9pm ET. Everyone in the office is in a competitive mood as the Halloween costume contest gets underway. Timothy Olyphant guest-stars.

Outsourced — NBC, Oct. 28 at 9:30pm ET. Excited about Halloween, Todd tries to get the office in the holiday spirit, but his co-workers have no idea what Halloween is all about.  After a series of Halloween pranks and an attempt to explain why people dress up, Todd decides to throw a costume party.

Let’s Make a Deal — CBS, Oct. 29 daytime (check local listings). This holiday-themed episode of the game show features an audience pumpkin-carving contest. Also in store are audience members dressed in Halloween attire; themed props in the show; prizes like a pumpkin with BMW car keys inside; and other surprises.

The Haunted Pumpkin of Sleepy Hollow — The Hub, Oct. 29 at 3pm ET. In this movie, it’s Halloween, and friends Nick and Katie are on a mission to find the biggest and best pumpkin in the patch. Unfortunately, the pumpkin they choose is haunted by the ghost of the Headless Horseman .. .and he wants his head back.

I Walked With a Zombie — TCM, Oct. 29 at 4:45pm ET. Jacques Tourneur directed this atmospheric 1943 film for producer Val Lewton, a supernatural take on Jane Eyre in which a nurse becomes caretaker for a Caribbean plantation owner’s wife and enters a mysterious world of voodoo and zombies.

“My Ghost Story” Marathon — Bio Channel, Oct. 29 from 5pm-4am.

Curse of the Demon — TCM, Oct. 29 at 6pm ET. An outstanding chiller from director Jacques Tourneur once again, with Dana Andrews as a skeptical psychologist investigating a devil cult, who slowly comes to believe that he may be the next target of a demon from hell. Tourneur was against the additions of the shots of the demon seen at the beginning and end of the film, but the suspense doesn’t suffer too much from them. Also known as Night of the Demon.

R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series — The Hub, Oct. 29 at 8pm ET. This new series on the new network is a live-action anthology program based on the works of popular young adult thriller writer R.L. Stine. The sneak preview airing tonight features a two-part episode called “Really You.”

Cropsey — Investigation Discovery, Oct. 29 at 8pm ET. This acclaimed and spooky documentary looks to solve one of New York’s most disturbing unsolved mysteries, and is the story of a real-life boogeyman.

Hammer horror films showcase — TCM, Oct. 29 at 8pm ET. The monthlong celebration of the Hammer studio’s horror films concludes with a night of movies devoted to Frankenstein and his monster: The Curse of Frankenstein (1957); Revenge of Frankenstein (1958); Frankenstein Created Woman (1966); and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed! (1969).

“Truth or Scare” Marathon — The Hub, Oct. 30 from noon-5pm ET. Michelle Trachtenberg is host of this series that explores haunted houses, mythical beasts and ancient legends around the globe.

“Celebrity Ghost Stories” Marathon — Bio Channel, Oct. 30 from 4pm-4am.

American Occult — Investigation Discovery, Oct. 30 at 8pm ET. This three-part miniseries, airing from 8pm-11pm, explores some of the most haunting subcultures in America, from self-professed vampires to cannibals and Satanists.

Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space — NBC, Oct. 30 at 8:30pm ET. The 2009 Halloween special spins off from the hit film Monsters vs. Aliens. The story continues after the events of the movie, as Susan Murphy (voice of Reese Witherspoon) and the Monsters now work with the U.S. government as special operatives. When an alien presence is detected in Susan’s hometown, right before Halloween, the team must investigate. Everything appears normal, right down to the jack-o-lanterns. But when Halloween arrives, those innocent-looking carved pumpkins are revealed for what they really are — mutant aliens with a plan to take over Earth.

Red: Werewolf Hunter — Syfy, Oct. 30 at 9pm ET. Felicia Day, star of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, who also played Vi in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, plays a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood in this original movie. Red (Day) brings her fiancé home, where he meets the family and learns about their business — hunting werewolves. He’s skeptical until bitten by a werewolf. When her family insists he must be killed, Red tries saving him.

The Truth Behind Zombies — National Geographic Channel, Oct. 30 at 10pm ET/PT. NGC travels to Haiti to enter the mysterious world of voodoo magic, explore zombies’ voodoo roots — and possibly uncover evidence of real-life zombification. We also meet some people who are preparing for a zombie apocalypse, and investigators who want to know whether the living dead are based in fact.

Nick at Nite Halloween Episodes — Nickelodeon, Oct. 30 from 10pm-3am. Halloween episodes of George Lopez, Everybody Hates Chris, Malcolm in the Middle and Family Matters.

“The Munsters” Marathon — Hallmark Channel, Oct. 31 from 8am-6pm ET/PT. A 10-hour, 20-episode marathon of the classic 1964-66 sitcom about those friendly monsters-next-door — Herman (Fred Gwynne), Lily (Yvonne De Carlo), Grandpa (Al Lewis), Eddie (Butch Patrick) and Marilyn (Pat Priest).

“The Haunted” Marathon — Animal Planet, Oct. 31 from 9am-4pm ET/PT. Seven hours of episodes from the show about supernatural events as seen through the eyes of people’s pets. Later that night, at 10pm ET/PT, there will be a premiere episode of The Haunted called “Horror in the Closet.”

The Monstrous Munster Mash — WGN America, Oct. 31 from 10am-7pm ET. The Munsters are also featured in this 18-episode marathon, with an opening and interstitials hosted by shock rocker Alice Cooper.

“A Haunting” Marathon — Discovery Channel, Oct. 31 from noon-6pm ET/PT. Six hours of episodes from the series that reenacts experiences people have had with often sinister paranormal phenomena.

“The Addams Family” Marathon — Hallmark Channel, Oct. 31 from 6pm-3am ET/PT. The “altogether ooky” clan is back in 18 episodes of the classic comedy series starring John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Ted Cassidy, Jackie Coogan, Lisa Loring, Ken Weatherwax and Felix Silla.

America’s Funniest Home Videos — ABC, Oct. 31 at 7pm ET. Trick-or-treat mishaps, costumes so terrifying that they scare children, pets in costume and more Halloween-related video clips.

Ghost Hunters Halloween Live — Syfy, Oct. 31 from 7pm-1am ET/PT. Cast members from the entire Ghost Hunters franchise, as well as some special guests, team up to take on the haunts at Buffalo Central Terminal in Buffalo, New York, during a live, all-night paranormal investigation. Built in 1929 and abandoned 50 years later, the Terminal was once a bustling, 14-story combination office tower and train station. Now, this decaying art deco masterpiece is a potent hotbed of paranormal activity.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: “Oregon School For the Deaf” — ABC, Oct. 31 at 8pm ET. Rob Zombie helps the team make the Oregon School for the Deaf’s basement safe enough to create their annual Halloween Nightmare Factory haunted house, which generates much-needed income for the financially strapped school. Marlee Matlin also appears.

Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story — Documentary Channel, Oct. 31 at 8pm ET/PT. Interviews with Hollywood legends and film critics such as John Waters, John Landis, Marcel Marceau, Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Leonard Maltin and others help bring to life the story of renowned low-budget filmmaker William Castle, who thrilled audiences with his legendary gimmicks and publicity stunts for such films as The Tingler and 1959’s House on Haunted Hill.

“Asia Extreme” Halloween — Sundance Channel, Oct. 31 at 8pm. Sundance’s Sunday-night showcase of Asian films gets extra-gory this month, in particular on Halloween night, with a marathon of four frightful films from the Far East. Things kick off with the Korean film Cadaver, about a group of medical students assigned to dissect the corpse of a beautiful young woman. Next is One Missed Call, from Japan’s Takashi Miike, in which modern technology runs mortally amok. Following that is Voice, from Korea, a tale of murder, supernatural visitations and stifled desire at an all-girls’ high school. Finishing off the marathon is another Korean film, Bloody Reunion, a slasher flick about a group of former classmates and their wheelchair-bound teacher.

Desperate Housewives: “Excited and Scared” — ABC, Oct. 31 at 9pm ET. As Halloween approaches, Susan is forced to reveal her secret, sexy Internet side job to a shocked Mike.

The Haunting — TCM, Oct. 31 at 9:30pm ET. This is the 1963 adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House (avoid the dreadful 1999 remake). Simply the finest ghost story ever presented on film, Robert Wise’s chiller is a classic in the “less is more” school of terror. We don’t see the ghosts that torment poor Eleanor (Julie Harris) and her friends, but we certainly are aware of their sinister presence.

The Walking Dead — AMC, Oct. 31 at 10pm ET. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) writes, directs and executive produces this great-looking adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic book, which chronicles the story of life following a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, traveling in search of a safe and secure home.

Poltergeist — TCM, Oct. 31 at 11:30pm ET. Producer Steven Spielberg and director Tobe Hooper crafted this terrific 1982 thriller about a suburban family terrorized by evil spirits that kidnap their daughter into another dimension. Evil toy clowns, sinister trees, things hiding under beds and in closets — all of the classic phobias of childhood are exploited to great effect here.

Elvira’s Movie Macabre — Syndicated, weekends; check local listings. The “Mistress of the Dark” (a.k.a. Cassandra Peterson) returns to introduce more so-bad-they’re good horror flicks. Elvira tells us that to qualify to be on Movie Macabre, a film must be “shot for a budget of less than $1.59.” This season, look for infamous titles such as The Giant Gila Monster, Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter, The Killer Shrews and the MST3K favorite, Manos, The Hands of Fate, among others.

The Simpsons: “Treehouse of Horror XXI” — FOX, Nov. 7 at 8pm ET/PT. The annual favorite is back (after Halloween once again, due to the World Series). In “War and Pieces,” the first of three tales, Marge, worried about the effects of excessively violent video games, encourages Bart and Milhouse to give wholesome, classic board games a shot. The best friends discover that board games aren’t boring after all when they find themselves playing a real-life game in which they must beat all the challenges before they are allowed to return to home. In “Tweenlight,” Lisa becomes smitten with a mysterious new student, Edmund (guest voice Daniel Radcliffe), who also happens to be a vampire. When a romance blossoms, the young lovers run away to Dracula-la Land, leaving Homer to come to Lisa’s rescue. In the final story, “Master and Cadaver,” Homer and Marge set sail on a romantic second honeymoon, but are interrupted when they rescue Roger (guest voice Hugh Laurie), a castaway who escaped an attempted poisoning on his ship. Convinced that Roger is sabotaging their getaway and plotting a murder of his own, Homer and Marge take matters into their own hands.

The Cleveland Show: “It’s the Great Pancake, Cleveland Brown” — FOX, Nov. 7 at 8:30pm ET/PT. Cleveland crushes Cleveland Jr.’s spirit when he forbids him from trick-or-treating because he thinks he is too old. Junior reinvents himself as a “cool kid” and is invited to attend a Halloween party with Roberta. When he gets picked on and is unhappy with his new persona, Cleveland and the gang come to Junior’s rescue and encourage his enthusiasm for the holiday.

Meanwhile, Steve falls head over heels for his overprotective friend’s younger sister and competes to win her heart in a Halloween showdown.
