HitFix.com reports that X-Men director Bryan Singer is set to helm a feature adaptation of Battlestar Galactica, the acclaimed space opera that aired for four seasons on the Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy). Apparently Singer had been prepping a sequel to the 1970s version when production was halted in deference to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. (Battlestar has scenes of planetwide destruction that made programmers queasy.)

Ronald Moore eventually stepped in as producer, and the show became one of the genre’s most acclaimed series of all time. Its influence even reached into the real world when the cast was asked to speak at the United Nations about human rights earlier this year. Its final season was one of the most anticipated events of the year. You can read our interview leading up to the final season with series star Edward James Olmos here.

It is unclear what the premise for Singer’s version will be or who will be in the cast. The Battlestar story continues on Syfy with a prequel series, Caprica, set to air in January.
