2009 Awards Shows

It seems like nowadays there are more awards shows than ever, with nearly everyone in every field of entertainment getting a shot at some special recognition. But the traditional — and generally more meaningful — ones still lead the way, and as this season of awards presentations comes upon us, you can start watching some of them this month. Most nominees had not been announced at presstime:

35th Annual People’s Choice Awards — CBS (Live, Jan. 7; tape-delayed Pacific). Queen Latifah returns as host of this ceremony, the first awards show of the year, which honors fan favorites in TV, movies and music. Nominees in various categories include The Dark Knight, Harrison Ford, Grey’s Anatomy, Alicia Keys and “I Kissed a Girl.”

14th Annual Critics Choice Awards — VH1 (Live, Jan. 8). In this ceremony, the Broadcast Film Critics Association honors the finest in cinematic achievement among 2008 releases, and provides viewers with the first opportunity to see all the top film awards contenders in one place.

66th Annual Golden Globe Awards — NBC (Live, Jan. 11). The Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognizes the finest in American television and film, featuring 14 categories in motion pictures, and 11 in TV.

15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards — TNT & TBS (Live, Jan. 25; tape-delayed Pacific). The only awards show where actors vote for each other, focusing on both individual performances and ensembles in motion pictures and television series.
