The Descent (2005, Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid)
Scream your last breath.
Quick Plot: Adventurous women set out to put a devastating event in their rear-view mirror on their annual “extreme” themed vacation. But this trip into uncharted caves leaves them more than they bargained for.
Scariest Moment: Our first glimpse of the creatures that live below the earth. Though, quite frankly, if you’re claustrophobic, as soon as they enter the caves, it gets a bit hairy.
Final Say: Most modern horror movies have a one-track mind. Gross the viewer out, add blood and occasional nudity and appeal to the teen market (if you can push the envelope on the PG-13 rating, all the better). But The Descent doesn’t follow that track. The Descent is a smart horror movie that scares you by playing on your fears. The Descent puts you alone, in a dark underground cave. You’ll be squeezed into a tight claustrophobic space alongside creatures that you never see. Ok, time to pull the covers over my head!
Just For Fun: Don’t think it’s scary? Check out the trailer here, and take special note of the way the 6 women form a skull.
